i have a look at that price, i brought from oaley electronics in the late 80s or early 1990s ir x vietnam 2000 dollars and a kit form for 900 and star light vision which amps light up to 50,000 times about 1500 dollars. 199 is a bargan if it can do the job.

Hey All,
Yeah I think for an entry level product at a low price it's pretty good. If someone does get one please let us know how it goes. Obviously it will have limitations of some sort but for what it's worth seems cool.
Cheers

I got one last year, I haven't actually used it an enormous amount - it's ok for what it is at the price it is.

I purchased one of these this week and it works very well. It is a compact unit with a decent range and overall quality is excellent. Photo and video is not too bad given the price. It's plug and play, so no need for software. The only down side is that it runs on batteries and is not rechargeable. Another gadget to add to the arsenal!

My preference is 1x to 1.2 x magnification. 5x magnification could not likely be used for navigating trails, because you would be seeing too small an area at 5 feet in front of you. Of course, you should not be walking trails after dark anyways. The generation 1 or 2 or higher was not noted in the advertisement. It is most likely generation 1 at that price. Generation 1 requires the night vision light assist in order to work in nearly darkened forests. Yowie can see the night vision light assist. It lights up everything like daylight, for the Yowie. And tells them where you are. Not that it makes any difference, the Yowie will know whether you are using a night vision device of some kind, whether the assist light is on or off. Some of the generation 2 devices are better than generation 3. If it was made in the U.S., the generation 3 are illegal to ship overseas, as I recall. So the manufacturers mislabel the device as generation 2, in order to sell it overseas.
From experience, you will have more action if you have no night vision devices. They will come close enough for you to hear them because they will know that you cannot see them.

This unit is 4x magnification with a range of 260m. It works with the IR light off, it's just not as detailed. I'm not sure what Gen it is, but you're probably right...Gen 1 for the price. I'm out and about in Yowie land quite often for work so it pays to have some equipment with me as I don't want another missed opportunity. The chances are I will not see anything with it, but you never know.
