This D'Aguilar NP seems like the place to visit (with care). I located it on Google Earth, and hey, it's practically on Brisbane's backdoor!
Yeah Dave theres still some nice pockets of forest in and around brisbane. We are very lucky to still have some. Even better if there is a chance the hairy men are in the vicinity!
I think the developers would knock it all down if they could. Its despicable the amount of forest cleared in the last few years alone to make way for shopping centres and housing estates.
Hi, there probably were campers there, but there a long drive away from this area. I will give the ranger a call tonight- tomorrow, people ring him to book camping spots. He lives in a house near the camp grounds, i would like to ask him what he has seen/heard out there. I am sure he will have some input. The day i got on this forum i had emailed a man called ray doherty, he is going out in 4 weeks, he is waiting on some camera. He advised me to stay away until he goes with us? I think rick and ron should go(only 3)--(not me) so he can get a taste first. then go out with his own crew and gadgets.( what i have heard so far tells me as soon as theres infra red and gadgets they stay away). Ron dropped in the stick today from the go pro, so am sitting down with rick tonight to watch it and hear all the rocks thrown.( i think less activity happened cause we had 2 many people on the last trip.

Hey Dee how did you go with the ranger? Yeah i would do whatever Ray suggests. He is experienced with these things. If you could identify some of the larger rocks thrown on second night Ray or Rusty222 may be able to get fingerprints. Just a thought. I get those sometimes! All the best.
Hi, couldnt get the rangers direct number, he is just a employee, the ph number is for main office--wildlife camping number so will go out to see him when i can. The plan is to do a day run there( aprox 2 weeks)just so the boys can get there bearings, i will c if anything has changed. Then we will wait on ray so ron rick and josh can go out night with him. Listened to the go pro, good sounds on the rocks hitting the ground. I have ordered a police-security body cam thats better at night as the go pro was dark and get rick to wear it when they go back.Heres a pic of rick with a rock there.Dee

Geez thats a decent sized rock. That could cause some damage if it hit one of you. Sounds like you're becoming a bit of a yowie hunter there with your tech/camera update!
Hi, well im learning off all you guys and google of course lol. Will be an expert in no time--yeah right. Its funny you know, you do get hooked and addicted when you know its not normal out there. Curiosity good or bad--not sure yet. Thats why we ran--became dangerous.
Yeah it must be hard stopping yourself from having a look now that you know they're out there. That was an intense experience you had and dangerous too.
Its great you could find information on the forum to help and cool you shared your story on here too.
I was talking to a freind of mine tonight and him and his son go camping/climbing in D'Aguilar forest all the time.
They also camp in other yowie hotspots and nothing has ever happened to them. They dont believe at all so i didnt bother telling them about your experience and sound like a nut.
I was looking at the map of D'Aguilar and it stretches to most of the forest on that side. Theres been sightings at mt glorious,mt nebo and mt cootha, all of which are part of that forest system.

Hi all, had some pm, so heres the update. Have not heard since from ray doherty so we are on our own. Have set up with the boys to go out again next sat night ( 25th) will bring our new cams and recorders we have purchased.I will get some one who is more computer savvy to place on here any findings. Last time we got great rock throwing noises from rons cam) so this time we have more equip. Its been ages and a very long wait.Scared already lol.
G’day adventurer. Will spare a thought for you on the 25th… stay safe on your Yowie finding expedition. Hope you will be wearing tin hats to help protect from any well directed rocks! Was wondering if you were taking along any special lighting?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved bright torches. The more powerful the beam, the better I liked it! Wolf will no doubt recall Sun Gun portable movie lights. He probably had one or two for his work. I recall a cameraman mate using one on a remote beach one night while we were all surf fishing. They were quite amazing back then.
Today the net is flooded with these new LED ‘tactical military flashlights’. The advertising hype is huge. You can buy them from american companies at around $50 or less with a supposed 75% discount which is just rubbish because they are never sold for the ridiculous over $200 price. The campaigns would put Demtel’s Tim Shaw to shame. His ‘but wait …there’s more’ steak knife giveaways have been replaced by phantom money. There are plenty on eBay at the moment and some are much cheaper. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/700-lumen-flashlight
Among the probably unsubstantiated marketing claims is they are able to ‘stop a bear in its tracks’. They are only small at around 6” long and have settings such as a strobe mode to perhaps disorientate living things. However, a can of bear pepper spray might be a better bet for an grumpy old Yowie.
My question is has anybody tried one, what brand and model and was it any good?

Apparently they're a big scam, according to several links from a Google search I did last (?) month.
Cheap, Chinese made stuff unfortunately so it will be buyer beware and expect to get something that is inferior and may not last very long.
700 lumens is not very bright for the price to begin with, when you can get 2400 lumens torches for the same price or less from Hong Kong with free postage.
I have had mates who have bought cheap torches and they are usually bright enough, but a couple have had switch failures, etc before too long.
I bought a small Fenix PD30 about 6 years ago, only has about 260 lumens out put but the build quality is awesome.
It all depends on how much of risk you want to take.
Hi, thanks. Being a guard in dark areas i have exceptional head lamps and torches. They are actually 20 000 lumen tactical lights, so yes they light up a extremely large width and distance(will light the whole forest up). Or maybe ill turn them off and stay still in a dark spot so they dont find me lol. I am kean to go out and not miss a thing. I have to be brave and keep cameras running at all times. Will get a hold of some spray to in the mean time. Its weird i want to take pics of it and allow them to come closer but on the other hand im getting nervous right now just the thought of going back.If im not posting on this site after the 25th you know theres missing people somewhere in the nat diag park. Not kidding.
I looked into those torches months ago, damn ads were popping up everywhere.
Best bet for anyone purchasing a high lumens torch is ebay. I picked one up for about $15 (about 2000 I think, my son borrowed it couple of months back and still has it)
Seems adventurer is right on top of the lighting requirements for the night hike. That’s good. Reckoned all those ads for the X700 were just a global grab for your cash. The advice confirms it.
Need a new one as my trusty Maglite that takes 6 D Cell batteries is just too big and cumbersome compared with modern LED technology. Will have to check out some of the Maglite LED’s. At least I’ll be sure of the quality. Now where’s that old Dolphin Lantern to use for a trade in…
Good luck to you adventurer. Shame ray hasnt contacted you but nothing to stop you from taking another look. Make sure you wear a stackhat. They might not appreciate another night time visit after the previous warnings! Be safe!
Nothing wrong with dolphin torches. Ive been using them my whole life and in my job working in ceilings and confined spaces.
The expensive torches are great but I'd hate to drop one down a wall or inaccessable hole so stick with the Dolphins. Ive found the usb charged torches are unreliable and cut out without warning so prefer replaceable batteries. Sux to be stranded in the dark!
Ive used a few cheap dolphin led copies and theyre good but still havent used an actual dolphin led yet bit will get one eventually.

At least you've now discovered a Porpoise for it . . .

Good luck tonight Dee. Hopefully these strong winds doesnt kick in again tonight or you will be dodging fallen trees as well as the rock throwers! Have a safe walk if you go out.
Thanks YB. least with the wind i wont here footsteps or even the smaller rocks thrown, so a bonus to me to stay calmer. Getting real nervous at this point--wonder if theyll still come out in this strong wind? Charging and checking gear now. me josh ron and rick are going. We r leaving at 7;30. Will keep you informed.
Hi, well what a extremely disappointing night. Only 4 of us went, got there at 8 pm, slightly earlier then usual.Drove toward the area and the mane drive track was closed ( due to flooding upgrades) so we had to park the car up and hike down to the area we would normally start our walk.So got there by foot and entered the trail, again quiet, but could here water running from down at the creek end.Lots of extremely large trees were down we had to crawl over.No wind thank gosh.Got to creek bank and all the rock piles were washed away, no new ones at all.No noise at the rocks so we sat. Soon came only a few knocks but from further down the creek(not directly where we were sitting) explored a little found nothing so couldnt proceed on our walk as the walkways were unstable due to the flooding. What a pity we couldnt go on(where we went last time) so instead we all walked for the first time down the creek bank toward where we heard the knocking sound. Heard nothing more there, just found some caves(think there fox/dingoe dens). Saw dog prints along river bank.So headed back out, as we were nearly out a large rock rolled down a hill toward us, we all stopped and looked, nothing else so proceeded out and hiked back to the car with no other disturbances. Think there was only "1" hanging around out there, dont know where the "others" went, thinking "they" may have gone up high out of there main area due to flooding.???who knows. Will wait for it to dry out and be back dry and normal and maybe hike again. Dee
Yes it sounds like you psyched yourself up but got let down. I was wondering how you might find it after reading the National Parks site and seeing there were a lot of tracks closed due to flooding and downed trees.
It wasn't a loss though. It seems you likely encountered the rear guard, left to keep an eye on things while the rest of the group was holed up in drier, safer areas.
The wood knocks were probably just the signal to the others that someone was about. I think you are right that they were on higher ground.
Depending on when the Rangers come through and clear the fallen timber, they may stay out of the area for a few more weeks until the activity dies down and the conditions dry up a bit more.
It all depends on where they come down for water and how often.

Without revealing your exact area, what NP are we talking about (might be back further in the thread, but I'm lazy)?
