Almasty Article

Hi Guys,

I just had an email from my wife, who is in Russia on business.
She told me she had heard of a recent sighting by some hunters of an Almasty in the Abkhazia region. (Abkhazia was a part of Georgia that is disputed by Russia and is now under effective control of Russia. I haven't been there myself but I have a good friend who frequently holidays there. Very cheap! It is quite hilly with lots of forest.) Apparently it was about 3 metres tall (!) and ran off when it saw them. Although historical sightings of the Almasty were numerous, even extending to stories about them being semi-domesticated (which I find difficult to believe), modern sightings are very rare.
When we are in Russia we live not far away from the Caucasus Mountains...you can see them in the distance.

My wife also sent me an 18 page file of stories about Almasty in the region. Many of them concern "Zena", the female who was apparently captured and lived in a village for some years. I'm sure you all know the story. Anyway, the file is in Russian. If you would like to read it I can try to translate it (using Google; it's too much for me to do by hand!)
Not sure how to make it available, though. Post it here, bit by bit?
Any suggestions welcome.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are a few tribes of "cro mag" or something floating around there.

Yeah, I used to think Australia was the "Big Country"....(they even made a TV show by that name)...until I went to Russia.
It is two and a half times bigger! Hitler was a fool to even try to take control of it. I flew for 10 hours in June to get from east to west, and I cut a couple of corners! Although I don't believe there could be any organised "tribes" still living out there, I firmly believe a creature like the Almasty (mostly solitary) could exist in the vast forests and hill areas. God knows how they avoid being bled dry by the ticks, though. (Everywhere you go, there are signs warning that you are entering "tick country"...and the ticks there carry diseases that can kill.)
I assume you are an Aussie working in Germany, Loneranger?

The Land of the Rus fascinates me too. So incredibly vast it would not surprise me if hards of mammoth still lived in that wilderness.

Russia's defence policy is so simple, retreat and let winter do the fighting.
Hitler, Napoleon, any invader throughout history has had to contend with an enemy that simply keeps sniping at their forces and retreating.

When Napoleon reached Moscow it was burnt so he could not find shelter, nor food for his troops, then along came winter...


As to ticks... regular, constant grooming could be the answer, much like any gorilla or chimpanzee troop. Or perhaps they make use of sulphur deposits, I was told an old army trick that is supposed to keep the biting insects away... a match head a day keeps the bities away.
