Otways Bound...

Unread post by Mad Academic »

Well, as I reported on another thread, I have bought the trusty Hilux.
It is a single-cab with a fiberglass canopy.
I noticed Bunnings have some IR Trail cams for $149 so will pick up one of those to take with me.
I'm off to the Otways to do a bit of tramping later this month. I've never been there before so it will be all new to me.
I chose the Otways because there was that "5 star" report by the young man near Beauchamp Falls.
Following the Otways I will continue on to Tasmania. (No Bush Apes there, but I have a house down south.)

I plan to put out some fruit on a stand overnight that should be difficult for possums to access.
I'll be looking for tracks, unusual tree breaks/marks, "beds" etc etc.

Wish me luck.

Gday MA , with your fruit put an egg or two out , I have found that even if the possums get the fruit ,to the best of my knowledge they don't take bumnuts , but mine keep going missing , and nothing is ever seen on my trail camera taking them
Good luck Greg

Hey MA
There are cheaper "No glow" game camera's on ebay for around $100. These IR leds don't give of the faint red glow that some do and are less likely to disturb any fauna in the are.

Hi Slats,

Thanks for the tip. I'll check them out.
I am damn sure the Bush Apes can see IR really well so yes, they would see normal IR cameras for sure.

Cheers,

MA

There's another topic in the forim about the hairy ones being able to see IR and I would have to agree from reports and the fact all nocturnal animals have a different rod and cone ratio in thier eyes to diurnal animals. The extra reseach I have done about it says that an IR wavelength of 940nm is invisible to us and seems less intrusive to nocturnal animals.

Anyway good luck I hope you get something!

From what I read from a US report, one of bigfoot's favourate food is peanuts butter.

Yes, I had also read that. There was one good story (USA) about some hunters that shot a bull elk weighing about 1,200lbs.
It was a long way from their truck. There was no way they could shift it as it was (unless they cut it up.)
They had an old Indian guide with them. He made up a big stack of peanut butter sandwiches and had left them out each day they were hunting, and again after the elk was shot and dressed. Each time, the sandwiches disappeared.
The next day the elk had been moved some considerable way to where the men could load it onto their truck. (I'm not sure how the "Bigfoots" were supposed to know that was what they were supposed to do but, anyway, that's the story.)

Here in OZ, biologists hoping to trap marsupials for a field survey routinely bait the traps with peanut butter. It seems it is universally liked!

So yes, I will be taking a jar of the smooth stuff and a loaf of bread along with me :)
I am also having a "food table" made up by a welder mate of mine that should be "possum-proof", to rule out food being taken by them.

I'd recommend NOT leaving food out for the yowies due to the possibility of human diseases being passed on. Re: http://www.orangutan.com/threats-to-orangutans/

I believe the main threats to Orang Utan survival are habitat destruction and poaching. Plenty of orphaned Orang Utan are raised in captivity (until later release) and their health does not seem to be at risk.

I note your concern but I will be setting out fruit and peanut butter in an attempt to get a photo. I doubt any will approach but we'll see.
