I hope they don't just replicate this crude sculpture, and actually make something more fitting to the Yowie.

Also, now you know where my avatar pic came from, haha.

Thanks Dion.

I would think it was made that way to look "aboriginal".

Perhaps, and I respect that idea whether it's true or not, but it's probably wishful thinking on my part in any case, as they may simply take a cast of the original and replicate it in metal, as I read some months back.

This will be the third Yowie sculpture in the park, with the second one replacing the original, 1980-erected, and badly weathered one in 1998. For those who have been around long enough, you may remember the trouble the Council had for some years, where tourists/locals kept stealing the poor Yowie's genitalia, which the Kilcoy Council dutifully replaced, until the thefts got out of hand, and the practice of replacing the bits was discontinued.

People, indeed, are strange. Who knows what kick they got out of being the proud owners of a set of sculpted wooden meat-and-two-veg? still, it goes to show how popular the Yowie artwork is I suppose.

Knew I had a family photo of the original Yowie statue, but it's not a good one. Blame slide film and age damage, but for what it's worth, 1985, Kilcoy's Yowie Park...

I'm glad they're replacing it. Hopefully, it'll look good in metal and last for longer. They should include the 'appendage' though...for the sake of accuracy, of course.

The lady who interrupted one in her backyard at Woodenbong (or glassbong, something like that) described it I believe?

Personally, I would prefer a more visually-accurate version to be crafted.

Never liked the original and found it very disappointing even as a kid.

That Yowie statue at Kilkoy was awful just a derivative for people to ridicule. (cheesy) If they can't come up with something better than the original don't bother.

Cheers for posting this...I had no idea it was gone.

I went there and filmed the site last year thankfully.

Well, it looks as if the replacement yowie statue is going to be a virtual replica of the 'crude woodcut' product...

Just now saw this on BookFace...

I had hoped for something a bit more life-like, but... seems it's not to be...

Well...it could've been worse. It's disappointing they didn't do a more realistic looking sculpt, though.

From some angles, the kilroy yowie statue didn't look completely terrible.

There's actually an awesome statue in a town nearby to Kilcoy which looks a hundred more times like the sculptor was carving a yowie statue.

Does anybody know the statue and the town I'm referring to?

I don't, but I wish I did! Googling has been unsuccessful for me. There are other towns with Yowie signs and similar big 'wooden board with a yowie painted on it and a cutout for people to stand behind and put their heads on the yowie 'body' type things, namely Kilcoy right at the park, Woodenbong and I think, Woodford.

On another related note... this exists and can be bought from Amazon... A Bigfoot Garden Statue no less.

And, for what it's worth, this is the original 1988 Yowie sculpture from Kilcoy, that they replaced with the more well-known one already illustrated, because people kept snapping off and stealing his genitalia... I will link it, rather than post it, in case anyone's sensibilities are offended by a wooden willy.

I understand the sculptors are going for an American Indian style totem pole look with these timber Kilcoy yowie statues. Maybe it is appropriate given the Yowie's mythical quality?

If you'd like to get an idea of how awesome a Yowie statue could look, in the hands of a different sculptor, and using black stone...

Check out the statue of Jimmy Crow standing proud in the centre of Crows Nest, Qld. It's not far from Kilcoy.

Of note, he stands near a hollow tree which represents the hollow tree he slept in.

When talking about the Yowie, Aboriginals have been known to say the Yowie emerges from hollow trees. This is what Neil Frost was told by Aboriginal elders when Neil was seeking answers to Yowies on his property.

Have a good look at the statue of Jimmy Crow and his tree. Have a look at his proportions and stature. The statue stands 6 foot five.

Just a coincidence he was fond of a hollow tree?

Someone may have to upload some recent photos....

Excellent post Black - I've driven past it, but not stopped, but I am visiting friends in Crows Nest in three weeks, so will stop and take some good pics. Until then, this is an informative page: http://monumentaustralia.org.au/themes/ ... jimmy-crow

Shazzoir,

Photos don't do the Jimmy Crow statue justice. Just wait til you get up close and personal with it.

I know this statue is of a famous indigenous man. But the yowie is often described as a hairy indigenous person, and this statue has the right shape, size, presence, and color (jet black).

The yowies I have seen have been jet black.

What I'm saying, is if you'd like to get an impression of what looking at a Dooligarl might actually feel like, this statue is literally head and shoulders above all the previous Kilroy Yowie statues or the current one they're carving.

I'm due in Crow's Nest on Mother's Day - and will make this a part of my day's outing to do just that, and take it all in first hand.

Thank you so much for the heads-up too, since I'd only ever driven past it before and not stopped for a proper look.

Whoa, that looks...underwhelming.

What it reminds me of are the old comedy sketches the D-Generation team used to do on The Late Show about "Pissweak World" when they were sending up Wobby's World.

I agree with Black. Jimmy Crow looks more like a yowie than the other thats supposed to be a yowie. Even the hands on Jimmy are more like it. And if he came out of a holliw tree? Well isnt that odd...?!
