Anyone know what these are? Animated gif. Hairy little creatures.

Unread post by Yowie bait »

Hi all, my phone is showing signs its going to die soon and i doubt i will get another i phone so am posting these before it does. I dont know what they are. They move very fast so ive included a slow version.

Sorry for small size but files are too large so ive reduced them and left the burst shot lineup on so you can see its not messed with and in correct order.

Ive showed them to a few yowie people and science types to some interest. Best ive been told is " no identifiable body parts" which is very true.

Theyre from sth east Qld and the area is being developed now so if theyre a rare marsupial then ive screwed up big time and should have done something about it ages ago.

Ive watched it hundreds of times so your guess is as good as mine. Please dont tell me theyre paeredoilia because theyre not. They are nearly impossible to see with the naked eye but i have seen them.

Be interested to read your thoughts but will try to refrain from commenting for now.

Yes that eye is interesting Wolf. Does look hareish.

Greg i was focused on the middle of the area when taking the photo. Possibly it/ they moved to my left?

There is a larger figure/ object in centre of pic behind a tree but not much movement from it. I think thats what drew my attention. That happens a lot in this area which is at the edge of a swamp.

I don't want to have to circle or suggest things but there is quite a lot going on in the photo.

Here is some more stills. One of a tiny thing that is to the right of screen and right of screen of main subjects and more zooms of the others.

If theres interest in this tommorow i will post the whole 30 shots in separate gifs and try to present it better.

Shouldnt have said i wouldnt comment! Cant help myself !

The best I can say is that it's a small mammal of some sort. It's clearly hairy/furry and not overly large...it could be any number of things. I'd agree that it's not a wallaby (for the reasons already stated). It could be literally any smallish, four-legged mammal.

Morning YB et al

I'm going to work my way through a list of mammals and monotremes of SE Qld, and try to eliminate what I think it's NOT...but if you can narrow down the location a bit more than 'SE Qld', that may assist in identification...

Whatever it is seems to be fairly small, so I'll restrict my options to those creatures smaller than a regular domestic cat, but not so small as to be mouse-sized (like the Antechinus).

Brown Hare: Body length 60 cm; weight 4 kg. Adults fawn to ginger-brown; very long ears; usually nocturnal - and this creature is plainly active in daylight hours... can you tell us what time of day you spotted this/these things previously?

Rabbit Body length 40 cm; weight 1.5 kg. Usually brown with a reddish neck and white belly; Open paddocks with adjacent cover. Isolated records from North Pine Dam, Willawong, Carole Park and Coomera. Rare in Greater Brisbane. Australia-wide, but mostly south of tropics; Also largely nocturnal, but that eye that I see in your image is very rabbit-like.

Echidna: I don't see any spines and they are notoriously slow moving.

Platypus: Rarely seen away from water

Brush-tailed Phascogale: tiny, but also mostly arboreal (lives in treetops); Body length 20 cm; tail length 19 cm; weight 180 g. Rat-sized; grey with a black 'bottle-brush' tail.

Long-nosed Bandicoot: Body length 40 cm; tail length 14 cm; weight 1.5 kg. Snout long and pointed; posture hunched; ears pointed; fur is soft yellow-brown; short tail. Doesn't have a paler eye ring, like the thing in your video, though. Also hangs out mostly in rainforests and gullies and also nocturnal.

Long-nosed Potoroo: Body length 36 cm, tail length 23 cm; weight 1 kg. Dark brown-grey body; dark tail; long narrow nose. Hops with its body almost horizontal. Another rainforest, nocturnal beastie. Also doesn't have the paler eye ring...

Northern Brown Bandicoot: Body length 400 mm; tail length 170 mm; weight 2 kg. A large male may reach the size of a miniature Fox Terrier dog. Snout long and pointed; movements jerky; posture hunched; ears rounded; harsh brown fur. Short tail (often absent). Often found in inner suburbs with protective daytime cover (e.g. long grass, thick shrubs, rubbish piles); outer suburbs — dry and wet eucalypt forests, open paddocks. Also occurs on Macleay, Moreton and Stradbroke Is. Nocturnal. No pale eye ring.

Rufous Bettong: Body length 38 cm; tail length 36 cm; weight 3 kg. Very small wallaby with long claws and silvery-ginger fur; blunt face; white (to off-white) tail; long thin hind legs. Found in dry open forest with a dense grassy ground cover (blady, kangaroo, wiregrass etc). Now rare and probably found only in the south-west (recently recorded from North McLean). Coastal and central Qld from Palmer River to north-eastern NSW. Nocturnal, but has pale eye ring...

Short-eared Mountain Possum: Body length 50 cm; tail length 40 cm; weight 4 kg. Cat-sized; usually dark slate-grey, but may be pure black; short round ears; tail not bushy near tip; black paws. Found mostly in rainforest or thick vegetation bordering watercourses. Some isolated populations in southern and western Brisbane suburbs (Long Pocket, Oxley, Moggill Road, Archerfield, North Tamborine and Samford). Coastal eastern Australia from Miriam Vale, Qld, to central NSW. Dark coloured, paler eye ring, but not grey in colour...

Spotted-tailed Quoll: Body length 50 cm; tail length 45 cm; weight 5 kg. Cat-sized; ginger-tan fur with white spots on body and tail. Lives in wet eucalypt forest and rainforest. Almost certainly extinct in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Old specimen records from Zillmere (1923), Oxley (1927) and Upper Brookfield (1957). More recent unconfirmed reports from Brisbane Forest Park, Enoggera Ck catchment (2004), Mt Nebo area Maleny-Conondale area (2003), Widgee (2004) and Cedar Pocket Rd, Kin Kin (2004). Recent confirmed records from Camira (2004) and Munruben (2005). North Qld tablelands, and eastern Australia from South-East Qld to Tas. Pretty sure you'd have 'spotted' spots on your mystery creatures, and the fur colour is variable.

Bush Rat: Body length 16 cm; tail length 15 cm; weight 120 g. Rat-sized; body brown-grey; tail shorter than head-body length and ringed with bands of scales. Rainforest and thickly vegetated moist gullies, lantana and bracken patches and creekside verges. Common along D'Aguilar Range and its associated gullies. Patchy distribution in coastal areas of eastern Australia, also SA and south-west WA. Nocturnal, again. And no eye patch.

Water Rat: Body length 30 cm; tail length 27 cm; weight 700 g. Large (rabbit-sized); brown-black back, golden belly; small ears; flattish ‘square’ head; white-tipped tail. Hangs out near river banks, estuaries, beaches, mangroves, wharves, lakes, dams, creeks and polluted watercourses. Also recorded from St Helena, Nth Stradbroke and Moreton Is. Reasonably common, though rarely seen. Australia-wide. Active day or night. Did you see any 'trackways' or trails that might indicate frequent usage? Droppings?

Really though, I can't see enough of the animal to see much at all, let alone ID it.

Can you upload your footage as video to YouTube to prevent the .GIF compression issue?

I'm also going to hazard a guess that large thing is a mother of the smaller things, which are playing about as young things are wont to do. The parent is still, but the babies are gambolling all over the place. Could also explain the different fur colours...

Thanks Shazz for your informative post and for taking the time. Water rat was at the top of my list for awhile and guinea foul was my first " non cryptic" response to the images.

What puzzles me most is the speed at which they are moving and the grey spots that appear in front of the smaller figure before the main ones appear.

That fast gif is the true speed of the animation and in a clearer version you can see the " blur" ( for want of a better word) of the movement. Unfortunately they appear at the end of the burst shot and i was focusing on the middle of screen when taking the shot.

That is early in the afternoon on christmas day. I had thrown out some chicken for them, it started raining and i had a couple of ciggarettes under a tree then came back and took the pic. I also asked them to appear in my photograph. Yes im a weirdo!

The area is on the outskirts of one of our main forest systems in brissy. (thumb)

I will try to put them on youtube later in arvo when i get home as im going out for a bit. My video editor wontcaccept the gifs but should take the photos.

Intriguing file pics Yowie Bait. I can definitely see a body outline with a face shot, eyes and nose in particular.

Hi YB
I copied the story below from Indigenous Ghost Stories on Facebook. Little Hairy People about 30-40 cm in height. I forget the name indigenous people used for these little ones. No area/region was mentioned.

The little hairy men.

Might as well tell a story my mum told me....
Mum and her younger sister were 5 & 6 when this happened. with older brother - he was 20 at the time.
They all went fishing at a little warf with their backs facing the bushland. After 20 minutes of catching quite a few fish, someone threw a rock over my mums head, this happened twice until their older brother told them to pack up.
..but leave three or four fish behind.
He then told the two girls to pick up a handful of rocks and not to look back. My mum and her sister were walking behind their older brother, dropping one rock and picking up another. sure enough they heard something behind
them but the did not look. The grass on the side was only half a metre high and the two young girls saw a black little figure running through the grass trying to keep up with them. Once they got close enough to the car they all left.
Their big brother eventually told them that it was a little hairy man throwing the rocks, they were taking all its fish! And the reason why the girls had to pick up the rocks was to keep it occupied, wandering what they were doing.

A couple of days later, my uncles white mate went to go fishing in the same place but didn't know of the hairy men that were there. No good. A few rocks got thrown over his head and he thought it was his friends playing a trick on him, but then he turned and saw a little black figure back away behind a tall tree.
He freaked out and took all his fish and belongings. On his way back to the car where my uncle was waiting
He saw little black hairy men run past him so fast it was a blur. This happened a lot of times- the hairy man would run and stop in front of him and keep running into the bush. He didn't know what these things were. He dropped. fish fish bucket and ran to the car
Oh, he must have been shitting bricks.
Once my uncle got there to pick him up he yelled "drive, go, lets go!"
The only reason he went alone was because he didn't believe his black mates that there was hairy men in the bush. They got back the house and He looked pale and frightened saying there were little things that looked like monkeys but like people too, with red eyes, only half a metre high My uncle told his white mate that, he took all the hairy man's fish, an that was the only reason that thing shown itself
And went, he said he ain't going fishing alone! haha(:

Whoops i was so distracted by that cool story that i forgot to say. I have read about the Kuritjah here on AYR. The little people that live in or phase in and out of trees but id say there would be various regional names for the little guys all over Australia and the world probably.

YowieBait, thank you, that is MUCH easier to view and make sense of!
Unfortunately, I still can't identify anything specific, but it seems that something jumps, rather than runs out of frame, and I definitely see a face at 1:11.
I am totally fascinated now! Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Mind you, if you put out meat / chicken, I doubt it's rabbits or hares, so that leaves potentially omnivorous or carnivorous species...

Hey Shazz, yes i agree. Its much better and a great suggestion from you. (thumb up)

I dont know if theyd been eating the chicken and disturbed them or not but couldnt find it all when i had a look and took the pic and had been watching the area from only 20 metres or so away while it was lightly raining and having my smokes.

Mostly any other time ive left food , the crows usually end up swooping down and taking it.

It is a beautiful little area abundant with wildlife. Real shame the swamp is getting blocked off by development but as you would have noticed, the developers are really having their way in bris at the moment.

I think i know the figure you mean that is grey and kind of ducks backwards. You can see its face a bit.

Another thing ive noticed is that there is possibly young on the head of the black figure behind the tree and maybe one on the head of the grey thing with the "hare" eye. (detective)

I'm not sure if this is a similar sighting, but it was about the same size and in the same area (SE QLD) and I can't explain what I saw. I have no videos or pics of it.

I've always been interested in the yowie phenomenon, and earlier this year I decided to act on some of my theories, go out and try to see something. I went out to an area near me that had previous yowie sightings, armed with a normal torch, and a UV torch. I hadn't heard much about UV light in relation to this stuff, but plenty on IR light, so I figured I'd take a chance, do something different. I went out there at night, shining the UV torch around, looking for anything unusual. I did this 3 times.
On the second time, I did see something. I shined the UV torch on a tree, and saw a weird looking possum climbing down the trunk. I wanted a better look, since using the UV light there wasn't a lot of detail, just four legs, broad shoulders, a weird-looking head, and a thick hairy tail. I turned the UV torch off, and shined the normal torch where it had been, and it was gone, like it was never there. There was less than a second inbetween, so I decided to use the UV torch again. There it was, maybe a little further down the tree, just frozen there. It then jumped down the tree, and moved like a monkey, using its hands to swing its feet forward, jumping on its legs, landing on its hands, repeat. It did that pretty fast. After I saw that, I left pretty quick.

The last time I didn't see anything, and I haven't been back, my cars not very reliable any more. I thought I saw something similar again at another area, but it happened too quick and, again, I didn't get any photographic evidence. That place floods every time it rains, so its difficult to get out there.

I don't know if its connected to what OP saw, I just saw 'hairy little creatures' and got excited. These are great pictures, man, and I love the open multiangled debate going on here.

Wow that is a weird sighting! Cant say i have seen one with a tail but sounds very familiar. What i have seen was very quick. Like " did i just see that?" Things moving so fast they barely register and then gone! Also running beside me in the long grass.

Glad you appreciate the pics. Made my day. Thanks! Shown them to some real cluey types and theyre all shocked and have no explanation. There seems to be areas where odd things happen. The area in the photos is swampy and would get flooded easily as well.

Ive been told that they are junjarri in that gif. Theres also a legendary little yowie called the kuritjah but not much info on em.

Thanks heaps for sharing your encounter. Pays to keep an open mind and your eyes peeled! (thumb up)

Reminds me of what I filmed late one night here in Tivoli Qld

Here is a small clip of the anomaly taken from the longer investigation.
https://youtu.be/N2_OTdGFzAE

And if anyone is interested, here is the full version of events filmed that night...
https://youtu.be/k2w7AEzvv3A

Although the "creature" size is a bit bigger than what is seen on your (Yowiebait's) posted animated Gif ,
in the full version I managed to film a possum shooting up a tree and then caught something else
lurking in the tall grass between my POV and the possum tree which seems to move like your beasty.

Cheers

Paul, that yellow tint image could be of a Spotted Tail Quoll/Tiger Quoll which fits with the location., though they are reportedly, rare here.

They could quite easily tackle a possum, and kill with a nape bite, as the tiger quoll has the second most powerful bite relative to body size of any living mammalian carnivore, exerting a force of 308 Newtons (31.4 kg force) per square centimetre.

interestingly, Quolls are from the same order as the Thylacine, Dasyuromorphia.

Interesting theory. Ill will move the five trap cameras from the Chuwar site to Tivoli as soon as Im finished working the site. It shouldn't take too long to catch them in action if they are around. That might also explain the regular disappearance of rabbits as soon as they start getting a toe hold in the local bush here. Cheers mate tasty food for thought as usual. (respekt)

Here is a small clip of the anomaly taken from the longer investigation.

And if anyone is interested, here is the full version of events filmed that night...

Although the "creature" size is a bit bigger than what is seen on your (Yowiebait's) posted animated Gif ,
in the full version I managed to film a possum shooting up a tree and then caught something else
lurking in the tall grass between my POV and the possum tree which seems to move like your beasty.

Cheers
Thats some interesting footage and images there Paul. Cant tell what it is but definetely something there. Doesnt hurt to look out for smaller critters i reckon. Easy to miss too.Never know what could be out there!

I've spoken to a few people who live on the edges of forest systems outside bris that say there's stuff all wildlife in the immediate areas near their houses. Others cant keep the things(possumsetc)away.

I did mention on here about a few years back one bloke who had a little hairy bloke pressing his face up against the screen door while him and his wife were watching tele. The fella did a double take when he saw it, looked back and it was gone! He heard some full on howls one night as well. Ya never know..(thumb up)
