No, my money is on their animal rearing practices, for selling, or eating.
Many live literally on top of their birds or with them.
Poultry are raised over water, under which are penned fish, which are also eaten, after having eaten the bird faeces.

There are no laws regarding how small farmers farm what they eat or sell at market.

Pandemics hit Asian countries first many a time, because of these practices. The National Geographic did a brilliant article on this some years ago, saying that pigs serve as a vector for many zoonoses which cannot ordinarily jump the gene barrier from fish or bird to humans. Pork rearing or consumption is massive in China, and pigs are scavengers and eaters par excellance of dead things including fowls, as well as being reared near them. A dead chicken or duck carrying a previously avian-only targeted influenza then, is eaten by pigs, and can mutate enough to affect the pig. Pigs are genetically similar in some ways to humans, and so, now that the pig has the disease, it can more easily jump to humans, where it continues to proliferate, kill, and in survivors, keep doing its shifting-antigen thing so that now it can live in a human host, too.

The Spanish Flu outbreak in Australia in 1919 (which was brought back with returning soldiers) killed thousands, and remains our single most virulent disease outbreak with up to 40% of the population of Australia infected, with 15 000 of them dying from it. Some Aboriginal communities recorded a mortality rate of 50 per cent but in white patients, the fatality percentage was something akin to 0.3%

The WHO has long been concerned and warned health authorities worldwide, of the danger these viruses present. H15N1 (bird flu) was the first real scare where it was proven that birds could transmit a deadly virus directly to humans, and millions of birds worldwide were forcibly culled from entire regions of Singapore and South East Asian countries where people had contracted the virus, and died. This compulsory cull kept the secondary waves of avian influenza at bay, but needed to be repeated in some areas more than once. Selling birds at markets was also banned, due to the risk of healthy birds being exposed to sick ones at market, and then unsold birds taken back home by their sellers, who often contracted the virus.

The government doesn't have to do anything - our shitty habits and terrible or non-existent hygiene when it comes to co-existing with food animals is doing quite a good enough job already. There's a reason so many of these new diseases seem to come out of Asia and sub-Continent. Third world or even second world countries can't afford culls, when the people have nothing to eat, and nobody is likely to report anything bad until it's become a real problem, or their own family members have died, and they just don't see why.

And for those of you who are familiar with the works of Stephen King, the horror writer, way back in the 80's, I started to believe that something like a Super-Flu (which in his book 'The Stand', was created in a lab, and then escaped, contaminating a worker, who panicked, and ran, spreading the virus everywhere he went until dying mere days later) would take out mankind. War, cancer, lifestyle diseases, smoking and drinking play their part, but nothing can beat a virus that is capable of killing one in three people who contract it, and which then mutates still further, becoming more virulent and taking out most of the planet.

Humankind will end not with a bang, but a whimper. And most likely, a flu'-laden coughing fit.

The Stand was one of my favourite Stephen King novels (and I read them all up until the late 90's).

For a scary non-fiction read 'The Hot Zone'... a very well researched book (the author of which momentarily escapes me) about Ebola, with a particular focus on Ebola Ziare. The strain had a kill rate of 70%, is extremely infectious with no known cure. It is referred to by the CDC scientists as the 'Slate Wiper' because if an outbreak ever spread outside African borders...

It was because of my knowledge (via the book) of Ebola we spent a lot of time scouting bug out locations and ways to get there back in 2012 when a similar strain was on the verge of becoming a global pandemic.

One spot we investigated was perfect with an infinite water supply, plenty of fish and game and was practically impossible to get to without a 4wd and canoe. It was while scouting potential long term camping spots we found a footprint in a creek bed!

I live in Gosford NSW area.
New Soth Wales has experienced minor occurrences of animal diseases in recent years, with significant localised impact. For example: · A virulent Newcastle disease outbreak at Mangrove Mountain (near Gosford) in 1999 resulted in the slaughter of almost 2 million poultry ·
I still remember back then when the total lockdown and quarantine of the area that took place and lasted for weeks. From memory there was a mass burial of all slaughtered poultry.

I am surprised that our local media are not covering/reporting this bird flu.
I wonder if our customs/ border patrol are doing any form of inbound human and/or animal screening for this flu atm or whether vaccinations are available.

A new strain of bird flu which kills 38 per cent of those it infects has been identified by the deputy chief medical officer for England as the most likely candidate to spark a worldwide flu pandemic.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer for England with special responsibility for emergency preparedness and pandemic planning, told the Telegraph that the virus concerning him and others most was H7N9, a flu virus circulating in poultry in China.
