tree chewing

Unread post by ferral »

Gday Dean and everyone,in the 'foliage signs'section of the photos and media there is a picture taken at Hazelbrook which shows a tree chewed or ripped down to the core of the tree, like someones been pretty bodgy with an axe.How high up the tree was that?Where im at i found a small gum tree with the same looking damage, about 6 inches from the base and another up at about 3 feet on the same tree with the debris sitting on the ground at the base, looks like a small pile of large woodchips.are there any native animals that would do this, ive never seen anything like it except that Hazelbrook photo.Weve got roos around here thats about it,well, thats all of seen.Cheers 8)

Cockatoos leave the kind of damage you've discribed , I've watched them do it many times , but that's not to say it wasn't caused by something else ! Yowie . . . ?
Northern NSW is prime realestate !
Cheers !

By the sounds of it I think Darren is on the money.

The "tree bites" that I have seen as well as found interesting have always found a grub bore hole and always the last 'bite' has had a clear as day 4 incisor mark, 2 each side and one side always slightly bigger than the other.

As darren said your in prime real estate, I look forward to anything you find :)

gday Darren and mikka,i took some pics of the tree but i only got a film camera,i havnt got into the digital age yet lol, when i get em developed ill get em on here some how so you all can have a look and see what ya think.Cockatoo's?yeah maybe,,ive only seen the odd black one or two around here but usually well away from the house and shed. The tree is about 7"across where whatever chewed it.the tree is about 60mtrs from the house and about100 mtrs from the road which is a main thoroughfare lots of log trucks and traffic etc.its chewed to the core, down to the hollow bit in the centre in two places.im convinced its not a yowie but id love to know what the bugger is thats responsible. :D
