A friend of mine had an encounter several years ago now at Platypus flat in the Coffs hinterland.
He was at the time working as a Ranger and was camping overnight at the campground there with a colleague, they were hoisting themselves up into the trees and conducting a species count ??
They had cooked up their tucker and decided that a few rums would be good and since nobody else was about they cranked up the AccaDacca.
Well a certain very large hairy individual took offense to the proceedings and jumped into the light of the camp and gave a thundering roar at them.
In my freinds words (we jumped in the cruiser and drove straight home to Coffs Harbour and left all our camp gear behind , pissed or not there was no way we was staying there overnight )
This occurred in the wee hours of the morning and it took 2 days before they could pluck up the courage to retrieve the abandoned equipment Lol.
These incidental encounters appear to be the most common type so I guess we could take a lesson from it and not try so hard to produce a result when out bush!
Great story!
Though you do wonder if the combination of the Overproof plus pranking mates might be the explanation

Obviously not an Acca Dacca fan! I guess if they have such acute hearing, acca dacca would be annoying plus those humans are in my spot again.
However, there may be something in that - those sounds made him/her come out in the open (if it wasn't pranksters).
I prefer Chopin (The Etudes, of course) when camping. No Hairies yet, so Cheesy Oz Rock might be a better choice?
Platypus flat is a located in a remote wilderness area surrounded by high mountains.
A short time ago, this morning I contacted my mate and reiterated the topic .
He said the image of this massive, muscular beast was burnt into his mind and it was definitely not a pranking mate .
The most outstanding recollection he described was the size of the K nine teeth when it opened its mouth to roar !
He says there is no way he wanted those clamping down around his throat .
On a lighter side he was amazed at the time how quickly they sobered up from fear .
I have been intoxicated in the past myself but when faced with a demanding situation seem to find the clarity to act accordingly.
Anyway yes or no you may say but my freind is a very honest person and does not get very drunk and is quite a large fulla himself.
He said he was dwarfed by this thing ! and again his words it had muscles in its s#@t !!

Amazing. You really wonder how many incidents, like this one, go unreported.
Meantime, did your mate investigate further via his workplace, or did he keep it quiet? Would be tricky, because as a Ranger he has a duty to report anything unusual or hazardous. If I saw something like that as a private citizen, I'd have reported it to police pretty much immediately (via 000), and asked to be updated on the case (which they will do, within reason).
Could be its the people disrespecting or percieved to be disrespecting the area that may experience a noisey aggro encounter. Not always though as some people seem to be doing nothing too bad by our standards and have the experience.
I would say think of them as a kind of bush ninja or ultimate bush stalker as opposed to a basic ape like creature as whatever they may be they are vastly superior to humans in that respect. Some of us may know our bush skills and forested areas very well but the yowie is another matter altogether as they are there 24 -7 365 days a year...i think?
According to some reports they will mimic your footsteps and stop when you stop which is a clever trick to avoid detection. As you say not everyone will be looking around as they walk either as there is a lot to avoid stepping on out there!
Yep sure Is a few encounters involving fishing. Could be a territorial thing. Its said to leave some fish as an offering . I know some humans who get ticked off if someone has been in their spot as well!
hmmm ... I haven't been fishing in a while
seriously, it does make sense. the person fishing is remaining stationary in Y's backyard .. AND stealing his dinner from the river. likewise hunters, I guess. hiding behind trees (Yowie style) and stealing those nummy rabbits.

I probably would play a bit of the late Dean Martin but his old hit "That's Amore" - for obvious reasons. Actually I am a rock fan (mainly sixties and early seventies), don't mind the classics also. They probably like Chopin - happy to sit in the shadows and listen to the concert.

Just a silly questions - the boxes where someone posts a quote by another contributor, how do you format that? My first attempt failed.
Its the two boxes right of screen when you are viewing a persons post on a thread one is "!" button the other is the "reply with quote button" that look like 66.

I meant to say ... but NOT his old hit "That's Amore" for obvious reasons. Tried writing the quote on a packed train - won't try that again.
Inthedark
My buddy and his colleague did report the incident at the time to his superiors .
I think in this area the existence of Yowies up in the hills out beyond the Coffs coast is widely accepted by various members of the NPWS , however unless you have a personal relationship with one of the staff members they are not likely to divulge that info .
I really feel that they see them as a native creature of the Australian bush and as such they need to be protected hence the WEIRD reply one may get when throwing around Yowie related questions to these people ??

Cheers, thanks for that. I'd love to know what the superiors said or did. Not likely to find out, I guess.
Another idea has occurred to me, meantime. I'm thinking of calling my local police and asking the question. They're in prime location for any reports (they MUST have had at least a few, over the years), so their response will be quite telling. I'll have my 'lie detector ears' on, and listen for the giveaways :p

Nobody doesn't enjoy a bit of Dean!
Ditto on the rock ... I'm also a fan. Just not the mainstream oz stuff. I'm more 60's garage rock and metal.

Hmm in that case i wonder what Seaun Boniwell or Sky Saxons views on the Sasquatch would be? Alice cooper and Todd Rundgren were avid hunters too.

Did not know Alice Cooper was a hunter. Met him once a while ago in Brisbane, he is also a collector of old fog watches. Don't know who would be scarier if met in the bush at night. Although Alice is rather short.
On a more serious note - has music been used before to get a reaction beyond those late night camp intrusions? If yes, any reaction? I take it they don't like loud noises, probably due to there keen hearing.

Thats interesting. A mate of mine met him in Brissy too. Says Alice was an A1 guy and was impressed when my mate mentioned Alices old band the Spiders.
Whether hes a hunter i dunno but was listening to him or Todd on a regional radio station in nsw and one of them actually rang the station and started talking about " wacking pigs" before talking hunting for awhile.
On the subject of music enticing the hairys, well theres the Ayr report of the lady singing regurly in the natural amphitheater that had an interesting encounter. Sounds like the lady was a regular to the spot to practice her singing.
Theres also j&js vocal efforts someone linked on the paranormal section of the forum but we should try and forget that...
