Yowie scream in Vic high country

Unread post by Mika »

A mate of mine had an interesting experience last night camped in the Vic high country at Macalister George on Burgoyne Track. It's a seriously steep 4WD track in dry rocky country with nice sandy campsites on Macalister river at the base. We were at the spot last week where I took the photo.
He said that sitting around the campfire about 9.45pm there was what sounded like a woman screaming at the top of her lungs. It went on for a couple of minutes and turned into loud chimp like ooh ooh type noises, very loud, very deep, followed by growling. He said the total time was about 5 minutes. The sound came from further to the right from where my photo was taken on the other side of the river, half away up the hill but further around to the right. That hill would be 60deg & you hear rocks sliding down that hill constantly which is unnerving at night.
I've been trying to soften my 4wding mate up to the idea of Yowies existing for years but he wouldn't admit to it being one but it has him rattled. He said his 2 teenage kids were scared but didn't want to show it but he was terrified.
I ran through the usual animals, fox, koala, wild dog, but he said, no way because it was way too loud & deep. He's hunted & 4wd up here since the early 90's and has no idea what he encountered.
Unfortunately he did not record the scream but I was interested to know if anybody has heard anything like that in Australia because that is the sort of sounds I would associate with North American Bigfoot, not Yowies, not that I necessarily know what one sounds like, but a woman's scream & loud deep chimp like sounds? Any reports like that? I wanted to play some yowie sounds for my mate but I'm not sure if any exist. Anyhow, just thought I'd put this out there.

Hey Mika, they make some very high pitched screaming, whining and yelping type sounds. Never heard the chimp type whoops but they have a wide range of vocals from what I can remember.

Your mate could check out Rustys website. Lots of vocalisations on there to compare with .(thumb)

Mate heard the same thing 13 years ago up near Thompson Reservoir. Not far from where you were.

I heard the first vocalization Rusty has listed on his site just after Easter last year near the Thompson at O'Tooles campsite. It consisted of 3 ascending whoops or whistles. Rusty called it a territorial display which makes sense as it was heard as soon as we hopped out of our cars. Also next morning on my second swing of the axe a large tree fell over in the same direction as the vocals the day before, no wind either, coincidence? Who knows, I just keep it in the back of my mind but there's alot of sightings up that way.

Gday Mika , I research around Walhalla all the time , and I hear some very strange calls in the middle of the night , none like you say but
ive heard calls that are definitely not the "norm" . Ive spent a lot of time in the bush from being in the Army to a lot of camping and
I can honestly say that ive never heard some of the calls Ive heard, till I started going here looking for signs ( I know all the possibilities possums, deer , roos, koalas etc ) .
I KNOW they are in my area and the area you speak of is not far away , as the crow flies , so I wouldn't doubt in the least that they are
there as well
Cheers Greg

The sound of a woman screaming, I've heard that before and it's quite surprising that the greater sooty owl has a call that can sound eerily the same as a woman's scream. Especially when it's a reverb you hear, rather than when the owl is directly in ear shot. It's a chilling noise:

The greater sooties aren't unheard of in the high country.

They're also very rarely heard. After years in the bush I've heard this owl only twice. They're mysterious and secretive birds.

Actually when I recorded that and posted it on my YT channel years ago one of my subscribers said that that is what it was . I got the distinct inpression she knew more about it than I did .

I went motorbike riding to Walhalla couple of times. I am scared riding to there on my own. I like to get some non-believers riding with me, coz I know if anything weird happens, they are not gonna run faster than me. :)

Walhalla should have 36 residents living in the town. Don't know if they know anything about yowies. I am always wondering how it likes to live there.
