Can Yowies contract COVID-19

Unread post by AL Pitman »

I have been concerned of late for the well being of the Yowie due to Corona virus .
They are obviously already masters of social distancing, well from us humans at least .
But there are many reports of them approaching close to houses , searching bins for food ect.
It seems plausible that if they have as identified at least 50% human dna than they could catch and spread the disease.
Perhaps we have in our ranks some medically trained professionals that could add their opinions and thoughts to this .

I'm sure nobody knows if yowies can catch Covid-19. :D

However, this morning's Nine News had an article about a tiger in New York City's Bronx Zoo testing positive for the coronavirus.

Jumping species is a bit of a worry!

I have seen that regarding the tiger .
That is a most worrying progression in this so far !
Maybe the hairy’s have a strong level of resistance due to their diet and healthy lifestyle ??

I recall a episode of Satsquatch chronicles where a native American Indian Tom Sewid was interviewed and shared his theory that the big foot population of British Columbia was also decimated by the smallpox pandemic that wiped out many of the Indian tribes in the America's.
Makes you wonder!

It is thought that the COVID19 virus's original host was a species of bat. Since then it has jumped to humans and now (surprisingly!) tigers.
So I would say the "hairies" would definitely be susceptible. And no; a "healthy diet and lifestyle" won't save them (or us).
As in humans, the disease would probably be less virulent in the young, but more severe in the elderly.
Their sparse distribution would probably be their best defense against it (not that they would know that.)

Quite a believable theory!

When I said a healthy diet could help them in their defence against flu type viruses , more specifically COVID-19 .
I was alluding to the different plants and barks and insects that they consume.
Maybe they unknowingly already have a preventative food source that they access .
Certainly their lifestyle by nature is their best defence during this time..

Yowies are hominids so that likely allows them to get it. Their haplogroup has been isolated on Australia for 100,000 years. Therefore they don't have the genetic diversity that comes from being exposed to diseases around the world like hominids with denisovian or neanderthal infusions to their DNA might have and that makes them even more susceptible.

That said there is a big difference between how native Americans may (or may not) have interacted with sasquatch tribes back in the old times and how rural australians interact with yowie. And small pox is more virulent and lethal.

Statistically i doubt yowie are coming in close contact with enough humans let alone infected humans for covid19 to spread to the yowie population. I personally would put it far down on my list of threats to the yowie
