It surprised me that it took place on Fraser Island. I have been there a couple of times and have had a swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake McKenzie. Rainwater is filtered through the sand over vast amounts of time making it incredibly pure. Great drinking water for Yowies!
I remember it being described as the ‘world’s largest sand island’. It is about 120k’s long and around 15k’s wide. That’s big enough for groups of Yowies to call home. The danger on the island was said to be from Dingos… there have been well documented attacks on people… and the many species of man eating sharks that patrol the coastline. I believe salt water crocs can sometimes be seen off the island’s beaches.
Looking this up, I found that the land bridge from the mainland to Fraser Island disappeared around 20,000 years and human habitation dates back to around 5000 years. I would have thought that with the indigenous occupation of Australia going back at least 60,000 years before that, it would have been much earlier.
Anyway Yowie bait, great re-telling of an amazing and very frightening experience! And I also really liked Donna's scary story.
Hi searcher, I still find it hard to believe and do feel a bit foolish about it being on Fraser but I cant deny it. As you pointed out the main threat there is sharks and dingoes and i have had a bad experience with dingoes too. Only one and that was enough. I think id take the Yowie over them!
It is suprising but it could house them easily though as you and Bluedog have both pointed out.
Im suprised Aboriginals werent there for longer than that? I did read up on it awhile ago. The local Indigenous people had a really hard time there. Some really tragic stories.
Never found anything about the Hairyman. Not even legends or dreamtime stories but i bet they knew about them.
Id love to go back there. It truly is a beautiful place and a real treasure. Your right about the water too. Its amazing!
This is but as you probably know there is a sea monster sighting on Fraser and also a fabled Wobby lake monster!

Hi Yowie Nakamoto. Yeah it was scary allright but like Donna's encounter and other close ups it didn't even touch us! Certainly put the scare into us and back at the tent too if that was them.
I think its safe to at least assume that it was a family group which explains the different sizes? That makes the most sense to me looking back. I think all the pandemonium was simply distraction to hand off the young one and scare us off.
Surely someone else has seen them there. I do feel like a bit of a dog for revealing it but its too late now. Thankfully Fraser is very well protected.

I remember finding Yowie baits encounter on Crypto PTSD and thought I'd struck gold finding an Aussie encounter in a sea of predominately US stories..

There use to be an Aussie 4wd forum where there was a thread called "Scary Swag Moments", 50 odd pages of some really creepy things going on in the wilds of Aussie's bush.. I do recall a few weird stories from Fraser island but forget the detail, its a shame the forum and thread were eventually taken down.. One could've rewritten that thread and made a book out of it, some good ones in there..

Haha you're right about the spelling!! It's an eerie little lake, sort of a mustard green colour with quite sizeable fish that swim at the surface very close to shore... There is a large dune that is slowly eating it up so they reckon within a few decades it'll be completely gone, but it means that the walk down to the edge is very steep and the lakebed just drops away. I can't swim in water I can't see the bottom of, but my wife's uncle who we were with jumped straight in and swam to the other side.
Lake Mackenzie on the other hand could be the most beautiful swimming spot in the whole world! although I do also find it eerie how it goes out quite shallow for 20-30 m and then just drops off into a deep blue pit of nothing. I've read that it's not actually so deep so was planning to take a mask and see if I can get to the bottom from the beach area... Next time.
As for Brisbane, I haven't yet done any real 'research' or looking, but I am certainly working up to it. A long standing knee injury is making it very hard to walk anywhere that's not flat pavement, but I have a plan and am getting somewhere. Within 6 months I hope to be able to head up Mt Cootha and go off-trail a bit to look for yowie signs. Eventually I'd like to do some overnight stays at the walk in camps in D'aguilar nat park just to see. Maybe one day I'll even get up to Mt Mee or Tibrogargan for a bit of a squiz... How about yourself?

Hi Bluedog. Tunnels is a good description of some of those roads and I bet you are still the only human thats stood there!
My family went there since the 60s so my dad knew how to get to a lot of the main cool places to see but a few times we went to new places and it was like we would never find it but a lagoon or clearing would appear virtually out of knowhere. It was so dense anything could be there 50 metres in and you wouldnt see it.
Like you said there would be ample room and resources there. It really is a primitive island paradise and perfect for the Yowie. Dont know how they go about blood lines or finding mates or if they travel to the main land. Id say there would be some sort of cave system there as well.

I have a cunning plan! i try to get to Fraser island a couple of times a year, next time i go ,i will spend a couple of nights in the Happy Valley pub ,i will wear my Yowie Hunters T Shirt and see if it sparks up any conversation from the locals (it will be tough to have to sit in the pub ,but im prepared to do it in the name of research)

Yes Wabby is creepy. I never ventured out far. I didnt like the sound of a bottomless lake either! Mackenzie is so beautiful but eerie as well when your out in the deep and look around.
Im not far from you and work in Toowong often. Theres an entrance to tracks up Mt Cootha there that id like to check out.
I was going out a lot but not for a while now. I had a few places Id frequent but am in the same boat as you at the moment with my fitness but would be keen to go for a walk at mt cootha if your up to it in the future.
Im not 100 percent on it but think the Bardon encounter or sighting was by either forum member Iwanttobelieve or convinced skeptic. Maybe search those names with Bardon and red eyeshine it might come up. Probably 2016 or 2017.

The breath on the back of the neck is something I will never forget from my encounter at Mudjimba. And the sheer speed it bluff charged me from behind at. The rumble of the ground that reserved up through my chest as I felt it get closer from about 30m away. And it made that distance up to me in about 2 seconds flat from what must have been a stand still or slow dawdle.

Wabby Lake is a very creepy place, especially in mid-winter. I remember having to break the ice of the tents before we could pack them away back in '82.... BRRRRRR... It simply should not be that cold anywhere in QLd.
AS for a 'water monster' in any of the Frazer perch lakes I have seen enormous catfish that look like they are flying above the water it's that clear... I'm talking 6 feet long!
The place is so rich in tucker, isolated and pure I would be surprised if NO hairy blokes lived there.
My Grandad used to swim bullock teams across to drag the timber out. They lost a few to the sharks on the crossings
Actually, I never did find out how he died while very young... wouldn't be surprised if a shark got him.

We have considered Frazer as an excellent bug out destination.
You could disappear and always be close to endless fresh, clean water and plenty of protein.

If he is still alive Lez Grensell... Greensle... Greensale... Grenzell? (Can't quite remember his last name) would be the man to talk to.
He used to run old ex-WWII Unimogs with open backs on week-long camping trips but I suspect OHS shut him down long ago. If you didn't stay alert as a passenger you would cop a branch across the head. I don't know his address but could probably find it on Google Earth.

Hi Wolf. I think i know Lez if thats his name who drove the Army trucks. They drove us around for a work trip we did there to build the walkway at eli creek which was supposed to stop the banks eroding. Anyway he (Lez) was a real character and yeah he would know some good stories from Fraser.
Mentioned the caves because of a few areas id seen where there was large cliffs of shale like stuff but i suppose they wouldve been sand like you say as theres apparently no rocks on the island other than the abandoned tools.

It was the pilot that told me about the monster. I was in the plane for some reason and he flew us around the Island. It was pretty cool.

Funny fella who always had a smile and a laugh (and why not he lived permanently in paradise).
He used to take the Field Naturalists my Mum was a part of all over the island. Down almost abandoned tracks so overgrown branches as thick as your arm would scrape across the tray, almost taking your head off. There would be leaves and sticks up to our knees when we arrived at the day's destination.
You could very easily build a cave out of logs and cover it all with a hill of sand... nobody would ever find you. It would not surprise me Yowies are capable of such artificial, likely temporary 'caves'... especially during summer... so you may not be far off with your thoughts on caves...
Off -topic... I am about to release the next volume after A Violent World, called A Burning World. It is mostly about the surviving Dogman brother and a Swamp Ape who 'rescues' a kid... you want a copy? I will email it to you.

Id be laughing too if i lived on an island! Yes i think we are talking about the same bloke. They said they would leave my nephew and i behind on one trip to Mcenzie if we didnt make it back to the truck on time and sure enough they were driving off when we finally came back. Was first back on the truck after that!
Bet your mum has seen some amazing sights over there. You had to know where to go or have someone take you to some places.
