The Pilliga again

Unread post by Wolf »

Heard yet another interesting tale about the Pilliga a couple of days ago while talking to a bloke I know.
He told me he used to live near the Pilliga Scrub and had a mate who used to fossick for Thunderbird eggs through it.

One day his mate told him he had felt watched and it had been freaking him out while he was fossicking.

Suddenly he chanced upon a dead roo. It looked like it had bee picked up and been bitten into, not chewed at like wild pigs or dogs would do. The bloke I was talking to said his mate had been badly freaked out by the experience, even though he didn't ever see what was watching him.

This is what gets me, the horrible way they kill things, no empathy.

It's probably functional/natural. Dogs/foxes/cats aren't exactly polite and empathetic and are probably just as hungry.

I've never been to the area, I've skirted around via Glen Innes/Armidale if I'm going south, so it's unfamiliar but very interesting. It is a nature reserve, with information published on NSW National Parks.

It would be confronting to be in that situation, and I understand people promoting cautionary signage. I've been in the bush through the day, close to town well before some areas were developed for real estate, and have been spooked by feeling like I was being watched, and having sticks thrown (two different areas). The stick throwing looked like a kid in the bush, possibly indigenous but looked see-through at the same time. My cousin and I legged it as quickly as we could, but it was probably a kid in the bush.

Very different to find a roo with a presumably large bite out of it and being watched...

I can understand hazards of pigs and getting lost, having met the former and come close to the latter at different times, but it's a whole new ballgame to throw hairies into the mix as a hazard of bushwalking.

What should National Parks do? You'd think pigs would warrant a waning sign, maybe warn of people being lost too and their duty of care is discharged?

The town of Pilliga would appear to be one hell of a spooky village at night especially houses on the perimeter facing the bush I have no doubt what so ever that the townsfolk have had visitations at night but probably reluctant to talk about it. (scared)

It would be a great spot for a base camp for field research into the Pilliga at night. I'm surprised some of you field researchers on the eastern seaboard haven't attempted this.

I’ve driven through off road tracks in the Pilaga at night. But I’ll be damned before I walk it at night. I’ve heard wood knocks at night (from the parked car with the windows down) and seen fresh footprints. That enough for me to know they’re real. I don’t NEED eyes on. :-)

I go to Pilliga every year as that is where my mother was born & bred.
I know 90% of the people in Pilliga & no one has ever said they have had the Pilliga Yowie in the village it self.
ALSO on the edge of town as you are coming in from North - Wee Waa / Narrabri side is the bore pool that gets alot of Grey Nomads camping there for the artesian hot springs & as far as I know there hasn't been any talk of anything strange happening there too.

ALSO Ive been droving cattle, pig chasing through the scrub during the day, BUT WONT EVER SPEND NIGHT IN THE SCRUB - NOT ON YOUR LIFE WOULD I.

Good Post Ed. Nice ending...

I know of plenty of people, because of course we would, who have had encounters out there.

I had my own encounter. Very unexpected encounter.

Definitely a unique hub of strangeness. Nexus Magazine had a fascinating article around 20 years ago.

Thanks Dean

I know there is a Yowie in the scrub, as I saw it ( in my spolights) dragging road kill off the Newel Hwy late one night a couple of years ago and that is the closest I ever want to be near it. That was our 1st & hopefully our last encounter with it.
Friends & family have doubted what we saw but to me & my partner, we both believe it was the yowie( & we are farmers so we dont spook easy or make up tales).

As I said before, I have no problems being in the scrub during the day, but at night, I am out of there.

Probably a lot more than one they have been seen in the day time but the night is when they are most active particularly from about 1 am to 3 am.

I spent a night there when travelling from Vic to Qld once( well almost a whole night 😂) Didn’t know any better and pulled off to the side of the road to have a sleep. Got awoken not too long after by something large and angry. Lay in my swag while what ever it was stalked around the perimeter of our camp, then threw everything in the back of the Ute after not hearing anything for a while and legged it to Narribri. Didn’t know anything about the Pilliga until I googled it after that experience

I don't have any hands-on experience like you but some of the stories I have read and I don't know if they are true you and in these cases, you can only take people for their word but if they are they are absolutely terrifying. grooveyguru you say our camp but I presume you were on your own.

There were 2 of us in 2 cars. Both Of us crapping ourselves. Not sure if we were lucky or unlucky. Just trying to get some sleep and we find something. Others go out there looking and see nothing. We are both from the bush and have never heard anything like the roar this thing gave us, really reverberated. Instant fear. Sort of regret not staying and waiting for daylight to look for clues but to be honest I have never been so scared in my life

Yeah, not a great idea... unless you want to 'communicate' with a Yowie, perhaps up so close you will become yet another missing person in the Pilliga (taz)

Forgive my ignorance: have lots of people gone missing in the Pilliga?
Is it like those Missing 411 cases that David Paulides reports about in the US?

Yes there are many people who go missing under mysterious circumstances. People's vehicles have been found smashed and there is no sign of them.

These are a couple of articles I could find about people who ran afoul of something in the Pilliga
