Kilcoy sighting May 2007?
Hi all,
According to the Kilcoy entry in Wikipedia, a UQ student named Daniel Raaen spotted a yowie in Kilcoy in May 2007. Can anyone help me find out more info about this sighting, or better yet, tell me how I can get in contact with Daniel?
Cheers,
McBain

Giday McBain,I've noticed that your post has been sitting idle for a few days now without a response,so I thought I'd give you a bit of a heads up so that you don't waste too much of your time waiting.Chances are it's most likely to never appear!I have come to realise over the last few years, that the public sharring of infomation on "AYR Message Boards",is non-existent!It's a shame, but it's fact!In my opinion,Yowie/BF/Big Cat/Tiger/UFO/Super Natural, whatever the research subject maybe, would advance in leaps and bounds if the sharring of infomation on the desirered field, was alot more forth-comming!As it stands at the moment,it is pretty much non-existent altogether.

Well, that's a shame, because if there's one place people should feel free to share information, it's the internet. I thought this site would be a great place for yowie spotters/enthusiasts to come together but maybe there are just not enough of us out there??
I certainly hope no one is holding back for fear of being ridiculed by me, because I'm a fervent cryptozoology fan from way back. I've been interested in ABCs and yowies and cryptids like that since I was a kid & have recently given Tony Healy and Paul Cropper's excellent yowie book pride of place on my bookshelf.

shame
Mr. Raaen may have no inclination to do anything further with his experience, including elaborate about it here. That's his right. It's also highly possible nobody here has spoken with Mr. Raaen. I take it, McBain, you're mostly interested in the exact location and behaviour exhibited?
Whilst the open exchange of information sounds prosperous, the reality is it's a double edged sword. Claims in this field prompt the presence or absence of evidence and invite a plethora of questions either way. Constant explaining of absence of evidence becomes tiresome, as does certain viewpoints and arguments.

That's right. If anyone here actually had his contact details, I doubt they would give them to me without checking with him first.

Hey guys, no need to get into an argument with each other or anything. It's no biggie, really. I was mainly just after some details about the student's encounter, and in a best-case scenario, maybe his contact details, but I'd honestly be happy just to find out a little bit about the encounter more than the very sketchy and intriguing sentence on Wikipedia, especially since the Wikipedia mention isn't referenced in any way so far as I can tell.

This Forum is about like-minded people coming together sharing their thoughts, sightings, interests etc…. It’s certainly not about handing out direct and sensitive information to the millions of people who visit this Board.
We’re are more than happy to discuss and assist, however when it comes down to “direct” locations and passing over witness details – it won’t happen. People on all walks of live approach us with information. They “trust” us not to expose either themselves OR the precise location.
People have to understand that in many of these cases, we already have personnel within our own inner circle or the actual witnesses themselves conducting their own field research in these areas.
To broadcast such detailed information would put us in a worthless position.
A) Everyday people come to us confidentially. To break that trust, is not in our code of ethics and is anti-productive to all involved.
B) From our own experience, allowing multiple groups AND/OR individuals working the same territory at the same time without knowledge of each other is simply quite dangerous – especially when some people chose to bring firearms.
C) Certain .gov has been involved, which we encourage, and the only way they confide in us is due to the fact that we maintain privacy to all involved without fear of being exposed. We will never break this code of ethics no matter WHO may raise this an issue.
Some people however, don’t mind us sharing info. Therefore (yes it’s been a long time since we have updated), but this we can share.
My advice to anyone wanting to know where they are, my best advice is to read up on the areas that are of interest and “Google Map” it via satellite. It’s not hard to work out where they are.
The hardest part is having the knowledge and experience of how to work the locations.
Best tip is to have no more than two people in your team. Do not take firearms. Do not operate with the direct intention to film them (at first). Work the lower ground and creek beds, search for odd foliage damage and prints, lower ground is where it is most moist and your best chance of obtaining prints. To get to these locations, is more than most are willing to do. Not many people are wiling to get dirty, dusty, cut up, have the will or fit enough to get there - I have experienced these people many times over the years. You either have the heart or not. Most don't.
Either bring them to you at night by making enough noise that will be of interest, yet not intimidating, OR sit quietly hours on end once you have established their path and wait. Remember they have an interest in what is happening in their own backyard and they WILL come and spy to see what is going on. Problem with making your own noise is that you will also, in turn, block out the movement that is happening around you – thus limit your noise and be silent after midnight. Once they have more confidence they will come back for a better look later in the night when they feel you are asleep and unaware. Smells of cooking helps and leave the remians of your food outside your tent (It's a help by percentage).
Do not go out on the grounds of expecting a daytime sighting. A nighttime ‘encounter’ can be even more dramatic and life changing without the subject being actually seen directly. Believe me…….
Night is when you have your best chance of an encounter. This is when they feel the safest and are far more bold due to the cloak of darkness.
Time is far too valuable. Play it smart and never be in a location without a reason (This is the biggest tip of all).
We have rarely come away without a result. It may not be what we want, but a non-seen night encounter (of varying degrees), can often be more exciting than walking away with a simple print.
They will always be better than us in their own territory. They are smart – never view them as an “animal”. Think more along the terms of a Human that does not want to be discovered and if you act accordingly and your smart enough – this is when it all comes together.
I don’t come to my own Forum often. Sometimes its weeks and I only skim through threads. We have countless new witness reports we can add, however we all very busy with our own lives that it often takes time to compile it all properly – then write it up depending if the witness allows us to release it.
Back to my point in the beginning, this Forum is for like-minded people to talk and discuss the Yowie or whatever their subject maybe. We do not deliberately hide information, but we do have to respect peoples anonymity and confidentiality, be it everyday people, .gov or whoever.
Please enjoy this Forum, and remember “Google satellite Maps” are very useful.

OK, sooo ... like-minded people are welcome here ... as long as they know the secret handshake? Riiiight.

With all due respect, did anyone here apart from Darren actually read my original post properly? Did I ever ask for Raaen's private phone number or addres? Did I ever ask for the precise location of the sighting, with GPS coordinates? Did I ever express an intention to mount an expedition to find the yowie with a bunch o' guns and beef jerky? No. I came here innocently asking if anyone knew any GENERAL info about the sighting besides what's on Wikipedia. The time of day. What the yowie looked like. What the yowie DID. How Raaen reacted when he saw it. Not exactly state secrets, I would've thought. I'm not conducting a Crime and Misconduct Investigation here, for crying out loud. I mean, doesn't anyone else think it's strange that Wikipedia would mention the sightee's full name and what university he was from but not mention any other details about the sighting and not include a reference for it? Am I the only one? Does anyone else (apart from Darren) feel like this site is like the old saying about the group of blind men who groped different parts of an elephant, and one thought the trunk was a snake and another thought the ear was a palm leaf etc?
No, actually, don't bother answering that. I'm leaving now.

thanks Dean, i got a lot from that post.
you have rekindled some ideas that had gone cold over the last year or so.
i'll fill the camelback , charge the camera and spotlight and head bush. thanks..
mcbain, take it easy,... to get help , advice and trust from people you dont know, you first have to earn it.
who knows who you are, you could be a journalist, out to discredit us or the witness.
or some crazy bush bashing nutter , hell bent on creating mayhem for our trusted community.
my advice...
dont get emotional, enjoy the site, learn a few things, add info that is relavent, dont feel victimised.
if you really have gone for good you'll never know the secret handshake.

Thanks Hillbilly.
Again, I stress while in the field, the importance of viewing them more as an escaped convict than a simple animal and you are the law. Think like a detective. Where would YOU hide, where would you find the best source of food, shelter and water.
If you Google the active areas, you can see the deep valleys and how far they are from mainstream society and roads. These deep valleys are where you want to be. They use them like corridors and this is where the abundance of food and water is. Look for game trails with broken foliage that doesn't make sense in regards to Australian native animals. For some reason they seem to like to snap and twist braches - be it large or very small. A Roo, Dingo or Koala can't do this. Remember they are masters of their own habitat, they are master trackers and aware of everything around them - also aware of leaving their own prints for their only predator (Humans). They rock hop in creek beds or walk along the sides in the dryer terrain so they don’t leave prints, however sometimes they do make mistakes and/or become complacent.
In regard to the secret handshake, as soon as we invent one, we’ll make it public here on the board (However everyone viewing the Forum must keep it secret)…….

McBain,
Apparently no one here can assist you, but hasn't Wikipedia assisted you enough? The real question is why you haven't bothered to speak with that person yourself???
Wikipedia has blissfully allowed his contact details to be easily attainable to the entire planet. So it's amusing your last post made mention of "blind men".

Hi McBain
I actually do this stuff for a living, and I would suggest that you have look at the Electronic White Pages that list two D Raaen's one in Toowoomba and one at Mooloolaba. Both listing have contact phone numbers.
There are no other D Raaens listed in the EWP in any other states in Australia other than the above two.
Good Luck.

Not correct.I did and you never bothered to respond.
If you are really interested in the phenomena..then spend a lousy $35 + $10-$15 postage and get the book with all the locations/data.
If you are not THAT interested...fair enough
> I am guessing that nobody has any info
err...you guessed wrong..

Cropper and Healy do

Now your hungry to give and share information in public eh.?:)
You posted about a profound experience on the 4th september "about a week before".
Its the 22nd Now.
So...after 26 days you still cannot find the precious 5 minutes or so to write down a brief outline of what happened.
Seriously..no one was after a short history of the second world war or anything too profound.
Its just an anecdotal report anyway..which going on past experience..probably wont appear anyway.
Funny...U were so keen to post until someone demanded of you what you had whinged about.
>It's a shame,but it's fact!In my opinion,Yowie/BF/Big >Cat/Tiger/UFO/Super Natural,whatever the research >subject >maybe,would advance in leaps and bounds if >the sharring of infomation on the desirered field,
"fact"...how would you know.?
Information is shared all the time.
I give information/links to my big cat site all the time off these boards.Do you know how many people ask intelligent questions or give a toss...bugger all.
Or return the favour..
Exactly what level of "information" did you seriously expect in a public forum on a fringe subject.?:)
Here is a great example why everything is not made public.
Look at "mcBain" asking in his first post ".."tell me how I can get in contact with Daniel".
And then a few posts later saying ""Did I ever ask for Raaen's private phone number or addres?".
Unbelievable !!
Secondly.."mcbain" wanted to contact a witness he found in wikipedia .
If "researchers" like "McBain" are to lazy to use the online telephone white pages and to thick to know what they actual post..why be surprised if "we" dont place all/more information on the table for the "general public".
>As it stands at the moment,it is pretty much non->existent altogether.
Yep...see "Mcbain" example.
And 26 days of waiting for you is another example.
Next time I am sharing information with many of the people whom I have met through this very board, in emails/texts/phone calls etc I will remind myself that its not really happening..

Seeing as we are talking about Kilcoy, does anyone have any places that is ok to take a few newbees that are keen on the subject?
Also I must add something to the way this thread has gone. Quite a few members here have given me Info, be it Dean or others. I see it as a 2 way street and a level of trust, just like everything else in life

Was that a direct attack towards me ozstrange? You may wish to pull your head in before making to big of a fool of yourself with unfounded coments.I have had a serious neck injury and I've been pretty much confined to a bed.The forwarding of a report has been the last thing on my mind.As it is,I have had to get my wife to post this on my behalf. So if you still feel the need to make things personal you really should check the archives as I've done my fare share of contributing and sharring with reports, pictures of research in the field, and useful posts on any number of subject and occasions! Respectfully up-yours!

Attack.?
Just humoursly chopping up your ideas ..no animosity was meant..
Just pointing out some minor problems with you complaining about the sharing of information on fringe subjects(which does happen..but you are unaware of this)...then taking a million years just to cut and paste a few lines about your experience.

My comments were all well founded...thats why I made them...
I didnt realise asking questions you couldnt answer ..and asking where your "report" was ...(that you still have not posted !)..made me look foolish...
Phew..Thanks for helping me with that line of "logic".

Thats bad luck..but since none of us are psychic... how would we have known..
So if you still feel the need to make things personal
Personal..? I dont know you from a bar of soap..how could I make any comments "personal".?

Did a Job for the Cab Shire Council up at Belthorpe Community hall last week.
On the way back decided to come back on Stony Creek Rd through the state forest heaps of places for Harry to hide even saw some deer roaming around.
In the gullies you had rainforest and normal bush everywhere else and not far from Woodford Qld.
There was water in the dams hope to go back there when Ive got more time, night time would be The GO!
