AYR Travelled to south Australia to test a flir over the weekend in a cryptid "hot spot".The thermal technology seems applicable to looking for anything with a heat signature.We think it would be best used to locate the target and then radio in other people to try and corner an animal using starlight scopes of some sort.We used the b/w mod rather than colour due to the colours were overwhelming.
The unit we had appears to be a still camera device that can be used for video..rather than a video device..purely for video.Hence..we could not disarm the still capture..which happened every few minutes..unless it was just recalibrating.The night was a full moon or close enough too it and it would have been better with zero light.Trees/rocks etc were radiating back heat and this unit would be better later on at night when heat signatures had diminished.
We output to a video...the main problem is the screen of the thermal emtting light..we taped that over an then used the video camera small viewer to stumble round .
Perhaps using a thermal output-video camera record-piggy back connection-output to video output goggles from Jaycar for about $240.00.Unit costs about $470.00 to lease for a few days if you choose the weekend.

Steve sat right between two of them at Kilkivan one night and didn't even know until they both began screaming at him. That wouldn't have happened if we had this equipment.

Price is about US$12,000.00+sales tax.
But....their is only one in Australia for lease...and no one else selling them here.
It appears to be a prohibited/restricted item for sale outside the US. FLIR Products can not be sold outside the US and its territoriesabd can not ship internationally through a freight forwarder to overseas APO, FPO or Canada
The Fluke TI25 sells here(supposedly)somewhere??? but only grabs stills...no video output.!

Based on a conversion of .78, that works out at around AUD17K. I can bring them in, however the price is out of my grasp at the current time.

While that equipment is good for detecting and recording a presence, it certainly falls far short of night vision to give an indication of features. Anything detected shows up as a white blob.
I would only use such a device to detect and then use night vision to capture features of the presence detected. A night vision/thermal vision hybrid camera would be useful for that but costs $25,000US so is not practical for me at this stage.
Will stick to night vision - much cheaper better picture, but will get thermal when i can afford it for detection use only.
