when is a yowie not a yowie
i have just got back from the barkly tablelands over near Qld border, swagged it for many nights in several isolated spots, one night camped at a billabong, stoked the fire up...into my swag..listening to the sounds of the bush.
2am i was woken by a crashing sound in the nearby scrub....something big was moving slowly through the undergrowth...S#*T, by myself 300 kms from anywhere...lay there quietly listening, its getting closer , then out steps a bloody camel...dirty great big camel....
moral of the story:- dont jump to conclusions

A wise man once said, 'I complained that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.'

In answer to the thread question:
1) When it's your next door neighbour dressed up after surgery to lengthen arms, trying to scare you and your family away from a haul of buried drugs
2) When it's a Dooligarl
3) When it's a Junjadee
4) When it's a Bunyip
5) When it's a Quinken
6) When it's a kooki local woman taking a midnight stroll in the bush

Re: when is a yowie not a yowie
Hi everyone,
I'm a new poster but I've been visiting this forum for about a year.
I was bushwalking in some hills on the Atherton Tablelands last year when I noticed some movement out of the corner of my eye. Whatever it was it went behind some trees just as I turned to face it.
After a few seconds I caught a glimpse of it again from about 40m away. Walking upright, moving at a brisk walk, arms swinging, about 170 - 180cm or so in height and moving parallel to the track. I've climbed these hills about a dozen times and to the best of my knowledge the track doesn't go where I saw this thing, there is one track and I was on it.
At this point I froze and my heart started pounding.
It was heading towards a small clearing so I stood still hoping for a better look.
Sure enough it reached the clearing. Out steps another bushwalker wearing (among other things) a bright red cap. Maybe he'd just taken a leak? Maybe he was a little lost? Such a let down. It's amazing that in the glimpses I got of him I didn't see a red hat.
Anyway that's my "Not really a Yowie" sighting. If he hadn't stepped out into the clearing I'd be wondering if what I saw was a Yowie.

Re: when is a yowie not a yowie
Was camping with some friends awhile ago now down Springbrook way. We were near a huge empty paddock.. but i'd say it was nearly 1km from where we were. So we were doing the usual camping thing with friends, talking, eating, drinking, etc.. when we hear this movement in the bush about 50m away from us. A friend who's heard stories about the Yowie immediately turned white and said something like "oh my god its a fk'ing yowie!". Me being the more rational (and less drunk) person of the group waited for a bit and listened more. Sure enough there was movement. All the while my friend is going on about all these stories he's heard about our hairy friend and how we'll all "get teared limb from limb if it comes at us" which, as you know, would induce just about anyone into a panic. So there's myself, 3 guys & one girl. Everyone else is getting panicky. Next thing you know the sound was getting closer, everyone getting more.. well, intense. So I wait for the last second, flicked my torch in the general direction of the sound, and what do you know...
...it was a cow. A big cow mind you, but a cow none-the-less. It then moo'd at us and walked off in search of grass or whatever. My friend went from white to bright red and tried to act all "ha-ha fooled you all" type of thing. Funny ending to what happened though. Much much later in the night, about 3am-ish I was in my tent & heard this screaming sound in the distance. I'd say it would've been like a cross between a howl & a scream. Whatever was doing it would scream for about 5 seconds or so, stop.. then start up again. This went on for about 10 minutes in total as far as I remember. My friend who'd freaked out before about the cow was in the tent with me, and I woke him up mid way through this screaming session & calmly said to him "now that's a yowie - cows don't scream like that". I sat up and listened to it until it stopped (it was weird, the sound of the screaming/howling would change. It would be very, well, bassy - then switch right up to a howling kind of noise), and went back to sleep.
My friend, after it stopped, didn't get a wink of sleep after.
..skip to the end, thats my little "not a yowie" to "most probably is a yowie" story.
