Inland havens

Unread post by topender »

Most of what i know and read involves our " friend" being encountered around the coastal areas of this country, the areas like the Piliga are the exception, i am wondering what other potential sites exist around Oz that are way inland and provide large amounts of cover, i suppose it would be just as easy to check out Google earth to see.
my work has me in the Barkly Tablelands and Roper Gulf region at the moment..so i am ever vigilant ( rubber-necking) when driving through this country looking for potential new areas

Any other thoughts?

Hi Topender, there were some reports from a few years back about sightings and footprints in the region between Kalgoorlie and Norseman in Western Australia.
That seems pretty far inland and is certainly not coastal, mostly low scrub and sandy desert area. Not your usual sort of thing.

Hey topender ,
I constantly refer to google earth , looking for nook's and cranies in the mountain's , hiding places , looking for area's where multiple valley's meet and join into one and where valley's leed onto farmland's or lakes or open scrub . I reckon it's a great research tool . You can do half your homework , at home . Drive straight to where the most likely place's are insteading of wandering aimlessly through the bush , but it's fun just explore .

Hope you spot something on your travel's Rusty2....................

I live in the Central North of Western Australia, at a place called Tom Price. Its like a oasis town, I recently had a encounter there.
The area of Tom Price is rather green but still resembles a desert. It is mountainous and there are many creek beds, which have very tall white bark gum trees.

Hope this gives you a understanding that they're around Tom Price.

PS: Tom Price is Around 500 km from Coral Bay which well known encounter happened.

Hey Rusty
Be careful wandering aimlessly near the coast.
I picked up 2 parasitic ticks near helensburgh recently within 2 minutes of heading off track.
It's a great country, but with many hazards, not to mention those pesky leeches too!

Yep, if you are trooping about in the bush, get some good strong insect repellent, RID is excellent, as it's also slightly greasy. Wear those sock saver cover things too, and if you want to really get serious about avoiding ticks, you can shave your legs (yes, I'm serious!) and apply a good band of Vaseline just below your knees - stops them travelling upwards, but only if you are in short grass. In longer grass, the young ticks literally sit on the tops of grass stems waiting for something to brush past and then they latch on.
If the grass is quite tall, they can then access your body and bypass all the effort you've gone to to prevent them crawling up your legs!

/have a tick scar the size of a 20cent as a permanent memento from Springbrook
//no, I won't show it to you
