Cat or ? Eludes Game Camera..Again

Unread post by Mike Williams »

So..the cat..or something..has been tripping the edge of the PIR beam of the game camera but stays just outside the video range.
My friends used electrical cable ties to tie a road killed wallaby up a tree..the animal..has pulled the wallaby out of the tree and broken the cable ties..yes the last shots of the video shows us at the front of the tree..which is facing the game camera..it has scratched the left front of the tree..in full view of the game camera..yet the camera "failed"..again.

Mike;

I know what you are feeling. If possible, can you find out the branding on the game cam? Some of the less sophisticated models take several seconds to respond to the motion detector circuit, then power up the camera, get the settings and then get the image. The process slows considerably the lower the light levels too.

In my mind, if something weighing 25 kilos or there abouts, jumping/scrambling up that tree trunk and grabbing dinner then pushing/falling off, could do all of that before some trail cams could respond due to above lagtime.

I've come to the conclusion, trail cams are great if you can really lock down the bait in some manner so there is a fearsome fight to wrestle dinner out of the tree, or as the NSW documentation suggests, heavy gauge wire cages. With a two camera setup with overlapping FOV's. Or perhaps, use a feeder like some have done with other animals and spread the bait so they spend time in the detection zone. It seems to be all about time on target.

Great footage there, I was impressed with the width of the claw strikes. Looked almost like one of those ninja climbing spike things they try to sell ya at the cheap martial arts stores (lol) .

Just a couple random thoughts, without any real answers.

(If they are locals, and willing, I would "volunteer" to help them with the next baiting exercise....)

Its a main brand http://www.cabelas.com
Delay time-Damn good point..we will test that this saturday.
But..my other problem is..even if it had a 10 sec delay..which it doesnt..it would have taken the beast ??? at least 10 seconds to get up and pull the damn animal down, after breaking electrical cable ties ..yet there is nothing...it even picks up birds flying past..

I've come to the conclusion, trail cams are great if you can really lock down the bait in some manner so there is a fearsome fight to wrestle dinner out of the tree, or as the NSW documentation suggests, heavy gauge wire cages.
we did..the guy that found the "empty" tree was stunned that anything could break the 2 cable ties..
With a two camera setup with overlapping FOV's.
As long as the weather is fine, thats what we are doing this week some time.
Just a couple random thoughts, without any real answers.
I dont even have any answers and I am not sure what the questions were.. (jest)
