Wondering if anyone knows of native or birds present in the Australian bush that make the "wooping" noise?
My parents have "wooping" sounds similar to a gibbon on their property and they call it the "woop woop bird" - they don't know it is a bird, but have just attributed the noises they hear to a bird of some kind.
So - what birds make these sort of calls? Are there any?
I would like to research it, but not sure where to start. I am curious to know if there is another plausible explanation for these sounds other than our hairy friends.

HI - YA MAD - ELAINE
I wondered as to which bird it was that makes the sound that you post about also , but only last week I finaly spotted the offender it was a pheasant chinese I think , they also make a deep gutteral drumming type sound as well . They are quite shy and seem to be just as happy on the ground as they do aloft .
I hope this helps and Iam not 100% sure if that is your offender but as a side note it's noise making is most prevellant in the early morn and at dusk .
IF WE DO NOT LOOK WE WILL NOT SEE !!!! !!!!

Thanks everyone - it would seem that the pheasant coucal is the culprit!

Elaine,
We hear these almost nightly here. It could be a "whoop" if you aren't paying attention.

These are supposed to be rare, or perhaps even lost being this far south, but I hear them occaisionally in certain rainforest areas.
