G'day Cadburyyowie,

The hairy ones seem to be distributed across Australia, even in hot and arid regions, but seemingly less so. A colleague has family in Perth and they have had a number of encounters on their farm over the years. I have been told a few stories from Western Australia, though understandably, not as many as from the East coast. Thanks and welcome to the forum.

G'day Cadburyyowie,

The farm is situated at Gidgegannup, Western Australia, East of Perth. According to Fred, they have heard "extremely loud, weird screaming" coming from out of the valley that sounds like "nothing that he has ever heard, anywhere". He also said that it causes the horses to go "berserk" and run away from the valley. I hope that this helps.

Hi guys, from WA as well.

I did post a story on here after talking to someone about encounters with the little hair ones. It was at couple of years ago and the guy was relunctant to talk about it (due to cultural reasons).

Will try and find the post for you later if I can find it.

Neil;

Great ABC segment! I heard rumors going on about the hair, never figured it would make a national news segment.

I recently finished a pair of books; Archaeology of Ancient Australia by Peter Hiscock and The First Americans by Adovasio (both books available on Kindle). They both pointed out to me once again how long people have been traveling over the globe in ways modern investigation has a difficult time in replicating. Also, how that radiation most likely happened.

The sheer times and effort involved in getting to Australia and then radiating through the countryside astounds me. I still believe there are huge gaps in the accepted theories regarding the peopling of North America and Australia, I doubt we will ever know much more than the broad overviews.

All of that to circle back around to our Hairy Friends and wonder if those migrations were similar or in some manner a mutual effort. I'm specifically referring to the European woodwose that has appeared often in European historical records including inclusion on a coat of arms at one point. Rather out there I know, sorry didn't mean to stir anyone's theory.

Thanks again for the WA information as well as the clip. It was very interesting.

Following yowie88's link.
That area is a very likely habitat for the hairy ones, It has large national parks and state forests surrounding it and a lot of farm land. It has rocky and hill outcrops and pine tress and medium scrub. Would be a great place to do an investigation.

I am supprised there are no reported sightings further into the southwest, maybe Denmark or the Stirling range. I am thinking about checking out the Peak Charles nat park based on nothing but a youtube comment, not many options where Im at.

thanks for sharing the intrrview. i'm from WA aswell. it's awesome to hear that we could have yowie over here. I think the southwest region around collie, nannup would be an ideal place. Denmark would also be a possibility - ive heard some weird stuff whilst camping there. I find it interesting there has been a sighting in kalamunda! hopefully more stories emerge.

Yeah agreed down south should be a hot spot! especially around collie, harvey, denmark, jarrahdale and denmark just to name a few. It is quite isolated down there and there are so many national parks you don't know where to start. Even heading east a bit I'm surprised theres been no reported sightings. Big forests and old mills etc are down that way aswell. I live near kalamunda and definitely seems like a good spot if you head down towards the state forrest near canning dam.

Im always from Perth, up Wanneroo way. I have also been to Victoria and been up in the Yarra Glen, Marysville and so on which look like hot spots. I have heard of a couple of sightings in Perth. Most of the ones reported i think we can dismiss. I am interested in the one in Gidgegannup. I do think the West is to hot for them though, and i do not believe they are here....

I had a work colleague having concerns over "hunters in Ghillie suits"
He states they upset his horses when they sit on his fence line staring at his stock?
The property backs onto state forest?
When he has challenged them they disappear into the scrub and he can't track them
This is out Wooroloo/ Toodjay.

Believer: Do these "hunters" actually sit on the fences or they stand ALONG the fence lines? If they were able to sit on the fence then you would assume that the weight of a Yowie would break the fence.

Maybe he could go in to the forest and try some wood knocking? See if there is any response?

This is a little exciting to hear of some wa sightings, just today I was told the Indigenous of
nothwest WA are well aware of the existance of what sound like dooligaih.
That area is about on par with the hottest places in the country but still with fairly regular rainfall,
this says to me that almost anywhere in the coutry atleast not too far inland is a possible habitat.

Just wondering if anyone could help, if an area was dry but not too dry for wild brumby horses to survive then would theoretically a yowie or two also be able to inhabit the same area ? Im thinking probably.

How dry are some of the areas of inland nsw like the Piliga?, are there always permanent water catchments and or running water around a sighting or thought to be inhabited area ?

I thought some of you WA people might be interested in this; we had a report come in last night, yet to get full details off the witnesses.
Hi there,

I wanted to report a sighting on the actually web page but for some reason it is glitchy on my ipad and I couldn't select the boxes to fill the information. So I will report here.

Kalgoorlie, Western Australia

At 0947 28/6/2014 Goldfields highway around 15 Kms from Kambalda.

My partner and I were driving along the highway at a speed of 110km we came around a long slow bend only to see a small toddler sized biped running from the centre of the road into the bush. It took around 5 seconds to get to the point on the road where it came from. We slowed right down and looked into the bush it ran into but saw nothing. We couldn't understand or even explain what we both had seen and it wasn't until I jumped on the net and found information on the Australian yowie that the thought occurred to me. Thought IDE jump on board and report to you guys and hope yous may have some information for me or even if anyone else has seen such a thing in my area. I wish now after reading all these stories that I went back and looked for prints or evidence!!!

Cheers, *****

Shiza, Im in Kalgoorlie and know that area a bit. There is some sort of year round water source right around there.
Goats are often seen near the hiway and some cattle from a near by station.
I wasnt even thinking that close to home.

The area Im suspect on is 150km+ south between Norseman and Salmon Gums, I drive throught there weekly for work and am almost certain there are quite a few tree breaks just along the side of the hiway.
I know some of them are likley man made and there was a decent storm through there a few months back but some of the tree leanings and breaks look a bit interesting to me.

Hi all!

First post to this forum but have been following it from time to time. Quite a few times I have sat down to write something on here but get pulled away to something else

I have had quite a few experience with yowies over the past few years here in Perth. Even had a very, very brief sighting. The usual rocks thrown, earth shaking thuds, snapped trees, footprints and pretty damn freaky sustained shrieks or screams. All my experiences have happened in the Darling Range between Mundarring and Serpentine. They seem to disappear during the hotter months and come back when it cools down. I imagine they would head down south when it gets hot.

I can post up some pics of the foot prints, I just don't have them on this PC im typing on. I do have a photo of a snapped tree that I took a week ago. It was fresh as you will see. Looks like it was snapped with a fast powerful force. Also note the scuffing further up the tree, where it looks like the force was applied. I don't know but maybe you experts can have a look? might of been from something else, but the area has that 'feeling' that I'm sure some of you would understand.

That's it for now but just wanted say YEP they are in WA too :)

Hi yowiebrother

I agree with you exactly on that location being mundering to serpentine. I live close to mundaring and the place does have that feeling to it, especially when you get out in deep bush.
Would you care to share your brief sightings?
thanks for the info!

Sorry Guys have been away for a while.
Just to clarify the Ghillie Suited figures sit/stand in the bush along the fence line.
I haven't pushed the subject or given my thoughts due to personality of owner.
He has observed them through binos and is more concerned they are shooting foxes and rabbits in the paddock?
He has driven the surrounding tracks to locate vehicles but no luck.

Hi Believer, that location is not too far from Chidlow, the area my partner and daughter have been walking the past week. We are looking to possibly move there as the bush has quite a strange vibe and yowies have crossed my mind while out there. Also see that there was an experience in Gidgeganup..I've heard a few stories from there.
My personal experience is that when I sense that a yowie is around (a feeling matched with strange sounds etc) my brain tends to think its an actual intruder. I get the same feeling as if a human is on the property, lurking out there in the darkness. It evokes a similar response in me. I got this feeling a few times when it happened on my previous property (semi rural property in Boya backing onto natural bushland). When I'm out bush I don't really get that feeling though, just when its on my own property.

Relating that to your friends possible rationalizing of it being hunters in ghillie suits.. it can be a similar feeling as if there is someone intruding etc.

Is it the first time the co worker has experience this? or has it happened before? and if so, was it around the same time of the year, within months?

Thanks for starting this post Cadburyyowie! Seems like you live around a good area for all this!

My brief sighting was a few years back now, when my partner and I took a friend out to a spot where we had previously heard a loud screaming or shrieking. It was almost dark, and my mate was looking into the pitch black of the bush in front of us and saying how he though he could see little 'pin pricks' of light coming and going (we were standing in a clearing behind a small rock pile) .. my partner and I looked intently into the darkness.. When all of a sudden, from quite far in the bush, something big took off at a super fast speed, cleared the bush and ran past the rock pile about 10 meters in front of us. Its initial take off, scared the living shite out of us and all three of us dropped to the ground instinctively.. and then my mate and I sprang instantly back up only to see what looked like a running hunched figure disappear behind a tree. It all happened so fast and this thing was running and made louder than human steps or thuds as it past us. Got goose bumps now remembering it. The figure was grey in the moonlight (wasn't a full moon) and looked to be around my height, maybe taller, while hunched over running. I'm 6'5 so it would have been quite a bit taller and it was filled out so would have been heavy. But man, fast! It was quite deep in the bush but seemed to emerge into the clearing in no time. And it wasn't in stealth mode lol
We all quickly pulled ourselves together and started our walk back to the car along a path that went up a wooded valley side, next to a fenced off farm clearing. We got lost a few times and were aware of something following us. By the time we were half way up the track, the farm owner suddenly switched on a huge spot light from the house at the top of the valley. Almost immediately this happened, there was a big THUD which shook the ground where we were standing. The sound of the thud was right behind us and to the left a bit on the other side of the fence. Then after a few beats, there was another thud from a distance. By this stage we were almost at a running pace and my mate who is a solid guy and not scared of much outside of the bush, bolted to the front of the line!

G’day Don,

Thanks for your report.

Regarding the photo of the damaged tree (IMG 8097), was there any “unusual” indication that the damage could have been made by teeth or claws, assuming that cockatoos, or other animals, weren’t responsible?

Do you think that the “pin pricks” of light might have been eyeshine? If so, did your mate comment on any observed colour or height?

We often saw small, singular, red / orange points of light in the bush for about a decade before we became yowie aware. During that time, we thought that we were seeing cigarette glows from local children, because the height seemed consistently correct and would occasionally intensify and/or change colour, as if a cigarette was being inhaled. The only problem was that we tended to observe these cigarette “glows” (reflections) regardless of the weather and for many years.

Also, we could not resolve two eyes at that distance, until we started using night vision binoculars. In any case, unless you are close, the eyes appear as one because they dilate to a very large diameter and with an interpupillary distance (IPD) similar to ours, it makes it extremely difficult to resolve the two eyes.

Interestingly, a healthy adult human pupil will dilate to about 9 mm when fully night adapted. That is equal to 62 square mm per eye. If the maximum dilation of a dooligahl is 30 mm, then this is equal to an area of 707 square mm, which is 11.4 times greater. Regardless of any other special night vision adaptations, that is a considerable optical advantage. Must turn night into day!

Can you estimate the km/h speed of movement when it “took off at a super fast speed”? The “run past” seems to be a typical intimidatory response.

Disappearing by stopping behind a tree, bush, depression or other obstruction is also a typical stealth behaviour although, for the casual witness, this might be interpreted as “vanishing”?

The foot thumping is also very interesting. From the coastal regions of NSW, I have been told that this behaviour is called “burminsticka” by a tribe, which seems to mean, “strikes the ground”. Clearly, it is used mostly as a warning to keep away but, in unique circumstances, it is used to gain attention. Another possibility is “this is how big and powerful I am?” which seems to require an implied response! Interestingly, all Australasian marsupial macropods “foot thump”, for a variety of behavioural and environmental reasons.

The height that you indicated would again suggest that it was a dooligahl (do you know the West Australian indigenous name?) Regarding the colour, as Ian would say, “everything appears grey at night, actually, it’s sepia.”

Following is another common behaviour. They rarely track directly from behind, even when there is a well established trail. Typically, it is a flanking movement from behind. In addition to the predatory pursuit, the burminsticka tends to get things moving along even quicker.

I have enjoyed comparing the many similarities between Eastern and Western dooligahl. Interesting that they seem similar physically and behaviourally. Opportunities for these comparisons don’t present that often. Thanks very much.

Hi Neil

Thank you for that info!

I actually went back to the location of the snapped tree/sapling this arvo and had another look and while there are a few other scuff marks around, they are all around the
same height as the main scuff mark that I photographed. I stood the tree back upright, and the main marking on the tree comes to the top of my head which would make it around
1.96 meters high. As its on quite a steep slope, maybe a kangaroo moving at speed and not seeing the tree could have snapped it like that? I really don't know. But it looks to
me like it was snapped quite instantly. Down below the hill side looks to be a place where from time to time, people might gather and drink and what not and I could imagine a
yowie trying to intimidate the group by doing something like that. We had a something similar happen to us a while back:

In Serpintine (Darling Range), my partner Carolin and I were were looking at a house for rent that was deep in the national forest. The surrounding bushland was magical and
really had that far away feeling and we fell in love with it the moment we first arrived. As the place had been vacated, we would spend quite a bit of time there before the
actual organized viewing, hanging out by the natural spring soaking it all in.
The viewing for the property came along, and that all went great and once everyone had left, we again decided to hang out in 'our' new home. It was late in the afternoon, and
the sun went down fast, leaving us in complete darkness. There was no moon, and you couldn't see your hands in front of your face. Anyways, as we were talking away drinking a
beer, we heard deep thuds coming from the dense tree filled hills above us. It must have been quite large rocks that were thrown and then rolling down the hill side making a
noise as it collided into other rocks and fallen branches. This had happened a few times while we were talking. We froze...and began to listen closely to the silence that
followed. We then heard what sounded like a beast of a thing making its way down the hillside. What ever it was, it sounded like it was breaking large limbs off trees and
dislodging rocks as it made its way down! We absolutely shat, and got up in total darkness and made our way back to our car and took off never to return! Someone else got the
house over us, which didn't bother us too much lol but would like to go back someday and have a look around that area.

In regards to your question about the "pin pricks" of light, I'd have to speak to my mate and see if he can recall what he saw. I didn't really get a chance to see much before
it all happened. Its interesting what you say about the eye shine and the large dilation of the pupils and appearing as one at a distance.

I'm not too sure of the speed as its like a blur in my head with the heavy foot steps as a sound track. I could hear the foot steps the whole time but only saw the tail end of
the experience. What's interesting though, is after you mentioned that they will stop behind trees or rocks etc as a stealth maneuver, it got me thinking (and the goosebumps
going). The tree it passed was one of a small cluster of trees in the clearing and the clearing goes for some distance downward to the bottom of the valley. I don't recall
hearing it for much after the tree though. It may have just stopped right there? and then followed us, and yes flanked us.

Interesting what you have said about the thumping. Not too sure what to make of the thuds we felt. Could have been young ones around and very protective and driving us out of
the area? That reminds me that we went back the next day and found what we thought might be a foot print and what could possibly of been a temporary dwelling. Have to dig
those photos up.

Yep, this guy was pretty big and yeah had that grey night colour. There are also supposed to be the smaller type around as well. My brothers aboriginal neighbor in Northam was
telling him about them one time.
And no, not too sure of the local aboriginal names for them. Would be great to find out.

Cheers!
