Braemar/Kumbarilla/Daandine State Forest - interesting conversation

Unread post by aaq »

I sometimes travel up to this area, which is west of Toowoomba in Queensland.

I was doing a risk assessment as a part of work, and I raised the issue of running into landowners and making sure we're doing the right thing and meeting expectations.

I know this area, but he's a local and has been for 15-20yrs. When I raised the issue about landowners he said "There are no landowners around there, it's Yowie country out there."

I prodded him a bit, and he said (he knows I sometimes work until after dark) you want to be leaving before it gets dark. It came across as a bit of a joke but still half serious.

I then said "So what, don't go into the state forest?" and he straight away said "s#@t no, no way."

The thing is, this guy is a 100% straight shooter, very honest and very matter-of-fact. He's somebody I've worked with for maybe 5 years and I think I'm a bit surprised that he said something like that and was so adamant.

I then remembered there was an encounter - I think unfriendly? - in Kumbarilla State Forest, further south. I can't seem to find it anywhere though.

Has anybody else had any encounters or knows somebody?

Awesome thanks for the link! That sounds like very intimidating encounter, that must be the one.

Thanks Dion.
